I must say I'm rather mystified when I read this adding mass business. My own arm, a Roksan Artemiz, has an effective mass of around 9 grams yet hosts a DL 103 very well, at least to my ears.In fact I just went through a re-examination of loading as result of a comparison I'd done but after going 300, to 1000, back to 300, it's now back where it started, at 100, as I found the top end just to hot for my sliking even at 300.
In fact I have been thinking of upgrading recently simply because I believe my TT/arm can benefit from an even more capable cartridge. However if I do I'll be looking to get something that exhibs a tonal balance similar to the 103. I guess in my case I looking for honest, hi-fi tricksters need not apply.
Follow Ups:
That tonearm of yours is very close to low mass. The Rega is 12 grams and it sucks with the Denon DL103R. My Empire Microtracer extracts 80-85 percent of the sound quality of my Grado Ref Master which costs 800 dollars retail.I think you can buy an Empire or Rek O Kut with this arm for under 200 bucks....
As I have said on numerous occasions I am getting wonderful results with a DL103 in my curren arm. My urge to experiment is really just a desire to combine what I'm getting with certain characteristic I've had with past cartridges. One such quality would be the frigtheningly awesome dynamics capabilities of a Roksan Shiraz (an EMT basically) I had many years ago. However in some other aspects I consider the DL103 to be the better cartridge.Mind you this is by way of explanation, not a solicitation for advice or recommendations since to be honest were you to offer same you'd be wasting your time.

do you think you might consider them hi-fi tricksters?

I have no idea about anything except that is how that DL-103 sounded to me. I could have been doing everything wrong in setting it up, or the arm I am using, or whatever. If you got any helpfull criticism I would be glad to hear it.Maybe I could take all that weight off and have another go. Hmm. That seems to be a suggestion burried within your snide posts.
Thanks for the help; I will give it a go and email you directly all the tedious differences it makes.

You'll want to make sure the cartridge body is very close to parallel to the record surface. The 103 has a relatively short body (vertical dimension) which could yield an odd VTA with the (IIRC) unadjustable 250.Some folks claim that VTA is not important with a 103 but my own experience indicates otherwise.
VTA adjustment should start by going perfectly parallel and then (if possible) dialed in with minor adjustments one way of the other (by ear).

I removed the weight and I don't think it made any difference. I have a 4mm shim on there so I will take that off. Thanks for the suggestion; it is tail up now.
And, while the OC9ML/II is more detailed on top, I've never found the treble lacking.

Or how many wads of chewing gum?I mean can you imagine, a 103 isn't exactly a featherweight cartridge. Now add an additional 7 grams ... wow! I wonder if Rega ever expected that much mass to be hanging at the from of a 250? Boggles the mind!
No Guru, No Method, No Teacher
They can weigh up to 2.5 grams. Just throw thee on and you should have a close approximation to that weight.
Dear mystified and boggled,i really got the idea from someone who has an expensive arm and put a nickel on the headshell. So I tried it and it worked.
BTW, insult me directly. I don't mind.
O MalleyYou haven't really lived until you've tried Vintage Cryoed Bulgarian coins, we're talking subtle nuance up the Ting / Yang ! ;-)
The reason a lot of folks are getting the DL 103's to sing on some arms that are a bit light, is very often additional damping
it makes for big difference.I know a guy who has run lower compliance Cartridges than a DL 103 on a Mission 774, he used the widest paddle and a slightly more viscous Silicone(Damping fluid)
As they say there is more than one way to skin a Cat (Denon)
it's a dangerous river.First, I removed all the weight. Tonight I will reweight it front and aft, see what happens. I got a nice buffalo nickel
It just might be the rb250.
I have a question. If you don't have any coins, will food stamps work?

As well as the fact that the Manufacturer expends (squanders) over $170.00 in administrative expenses for every single dollar in profit
and many of the cartridges develop (loss of self esteem based )dependency and reduced functionality issues once they've been mounted on these entitlement tonearms :-(

fine in a RB 250/300. The arms are close, effective mass wise. I kinda wish I had an RB250 to try it.
