You may have heard that a new professional level 2-channel audio review website is to be published Nov. 1 of this year. We plan many unique features, but perhaps the most unique is that we will focus not on ourselves but on you - the audiophile. That's why we're seeking input and opinions from as many people as possible who are as passionate about music and audio as we are. We will also be focusing on value or the "bang-for-the-buck" factor. Therefore, we woun't be reviewing midfi stuff from Circuit City, nor will be reviewing the megabucks with prices that resemble phone numbers. With that in mind, is there a table or cart that has not yet been reviewed or reviewed on a very limited basis, that YOU would like to see formally reviewed? Products that you've heard about that have not yet been released are included, too. Please just keep the prices under $8,000 for tables and $2,000 for carts. The more "under' the better.
We'll do our best to aquire the most popular choices ASAP.
Follow Ups:
How about a Micro-Seiki SX-8000 with a MAX-282 tonearm fitted with an Accuphase AC-1 cartridge fed thru an Accuphase C-17 or C-220 phono amp?
Probably not. Just being honest & realistic.

Appears to be a winning combination for a good price but there isn't much published. Usually mentioned in comparison with other tables but not a full review.
Thanks. We'll look into it.

Their current top player.
And what are the basic differences between them. I'm very tempted to try one of them at some time when this AT OC-9/ML II is finally shot. (Not that I would be discontent with it, no problem to stay with the same cart, just trying to find something that has the same qualities and a bit more extended please).
Another very interesting TT that is ready to go with a supplied stand.
Yes I love the look of that and I think it's a terrific value. Already looking into it!
Starter TT: Pioneer Pl-12D, Sansui Sr222, Thorens TD 165/166, Dual 505Midfi: Thorens Td145/150/160, Technics Sl-1200, Dual 700 series
High end: Garrard 301/401, Thorens TD124/125/126, modded Lenco/Russco/Rek-O-Kut
Amplification: vintage integrated amps, preamps, receivers with good phono parts
How does the vintage stuff compare to the new stuff? Of course the site would have to be totally independant so NO ads or banners.

Triode,Looking at the Grand Prix Audio website I only see one table; the Monaco at $20,000.
Do you have any more info?

a shootout between a Michell Tecnoarm v. Origin Live Silver.
.
Which Tecno-Arm? The "A" is the best of the Rega-based arms that I have heard by a longshot!
I'd like to see what the relatively new Graham Slee Fanfare MC Phono Pre is all about. I haven't seen any reviews, but haven't looked for the last month or so. Sounds interesting though and he does make good stuff.
Mabey a shoot-out between different manufactures' tables at various price points.
For carts,Ortofon super series, any of the Grados within your price limits,a couple of Shures, and of course, the AT-OC9ML/II.
I'm not sure how many affordable arms are out ther, but the RBs,of course.Mabey some older classics like the Infinity Black Widow and SME arms.
good luck with your project.
enjoy,
mark
Would love to see a review of the Ikeda tonearm and matching cartridge(s).A compare/contrast with the FR64/Fr cartridge would be fun too.

I believe Absolute Sound did that - it was their product of the year. $17,000.

Wonder why it's not been done already.
A fully & completely KAB modded SL-1200/1210 (as already suggested). What's the full potential? I'm curious. Maybe you could get one from Kevin including the upcoming (when Kevin, WHEN!!?) tonearm rewire upgrade?.Audio Technica AT-440MLa since I'm considering one myself. :-)
The new Thorens TD-350. It's belt drive and suspended so it's completely unhip. With Thorens not being the company they used to be, does it still compare to their big offerings from way back when? Some history in there...
That weird & crazy Thales tonearm (I guess it's too expensive?).
One or more (maybe a "group" test) of the old but still relevant cartridge designs like Decca, Ortofon SPU and EMT. Throw in a DL-103 if you MUST. :-)
Maybe a Moerch tonearm (like a UP-4)? They don't seem to get a lot of attention "over there" (me? I'm from Denmark).
not your everyday arm...
I have been shopping for a TT for a couple of weeks. I narrowed my search down to a VPI Scoutmaster, a used VPI Aries and an Origin Live Aurora with Silver or Encounter tone arm. There is tons of info on VPI but I decided against them because I want a more forward sound. VPI's are more in the soft warm catagory from what I was told. I pulled the trigger on the Aurora and Encounter arm. I would have loved to have seen more information on this table though. There are two versions. Tha standard and the gold. I would like to know the differences between them. Also the differences beteween the Silver and the Encounter arm. Origin is highly regarded in europe. I went ahead and bought it. I feel like I'm half crazy spending so much on a table. I hope it is as good as they say when it arrives.
I would like to see my Technics but it is not stock, this might cause a problem.Technics SL1200Mk2 with KAB PS1200 power supply, KAB strobe disabler, Origin Live fully rebuilt RB250 arm, Audio Technica ATOC9 and the Graham Slee Fanfare MC phono stage with GSP uprated power supply.
If not possible, just a stock SL1200 although when you get round to phono stages, the GSP Fanfare should be on your list, it is different to all other MC stages.
I would like to see a revisit review of the Shure Type III with a S.A.S. stylus, kind of revisiting an old friend with a new component.
Thanks for the suggestion, but since Shure IIIs aren't made now I don't think it would be practical.

Never hurts to ask, even tho I imagine more folks are using a Type III or Type IV than a high end Rega
an old Oracle Delphi MK2. WAY under 8k too! Put 'er up against a Scout that we keep hearing about(even though everyone seems to be selling theirs on a-gon lately). Also should review all cartridges under $300 in a huge blind test, and see if a couple of gems really stand out in that crowd and/or fool the reviewers. THOSE are the ones many of us are curious about(sorta like the 103). Has anyone tricked a hi-fi'er by making them listen to a cheap cartidge and he ended up liking it until you said what it was?
Well, do you want to ship us your Delphi? I wouldn't ship it anywhere if I were you. Hold on to that beauty! I'm glad that you said that though, because we DO want to do a regular column on VINTAGE TABLES. We've yet to find anyone with the time and expertise to head that up. I've asked. If you know of someone who would like to share their passion about vintage tables please by all means have them email me. I do have a great person to do vintage amps, but not tables - yet. We're also looking for that guy that lives and breathes tubes. We want to do a section on tube rolling, too. I know we won't be able to accomplish all of this on day one, but we'll get there.
stereomojo.com
It's been a pretty good table, I had some speed issues but I think my new belt cleared that up. I've been doing some 'cartridge rolling' lately, would love to read some of those reviews, specially the ones in the $200-ish range. That would be fun though, an old table against a newer model, sort of like they do in car magazines sometimes. It might need to be different makes though, wouldn't really be fair to put a Delphi mk1 up against a mk5. I know they say the table and arm can be the most important things, but i'm finding that trying different cartridges is changing the sound more than when I went from a cheap Pioneer to a Thorens td166m2 to a Delphi mk2.
Not on the same subject. But something I would like to see reviewed. the new Simaudio phono preamp Moon LP 5.3.
<> Actually, that IS on the subject. And an excellent suggestion. One of our reviewers in SF specializes in phono pres. I'l forward your post to him.

Hey Gang:
Just signed up today to be a Rega dealer in Canada. I should have the first one, to review. FINALLY an MC from Rega! Heard it is *quite* competitive in its price bracket!
At $1,695 that one is already on our radar. Good suggestion!
ThanksBTW, we are always looking for well qualified, experienced audiophiles who would interested in sharing their passion about their area of music or audio expertise. If you think you qualify, send email with your background. We'll talk.

I would love to disclose that, but we believe in playing by the rules. We know that our ethics will be under constant scrutiny by many folks here and many other websites. As well as our competitors. The domain name, webspace and server have been paid for and registered. Webdesigners are putting the final touches on the overall design and the graphic artsists are finalizing our logo. (It's going to be very cool) Musikmike has agreed to write an introduction to the VA for our first issue. RodM has been invited to do the same for the AA overall. I think audiophiles need as much info as they can get and there's no better place (yet!) than here.BTW, we will be emphasizing analog since we think tables/carts/LPs are grossly underreprsented in the press. BUT, we will also do digital. No MCH or video - just 2channel.
I happen to know that digital is about to undergo a huge seachange in quality. I've heard it.
I just can't disclose that yet. Oh, and it's not a new format, either. Stay tuned.
be a step up in quality?
