And I got proof of that this morning. I decided to spin a 7" 45 single version of Atlanta Rhythmn Section's So Into You on Polydor and it sounds fine. But when I tried to record that song the other week with the Ortofon, it was unuseable. Mistracked something fierce and it never did so before.
Now not the whole record was affected, but about halfway through it was.
So yes, the stylus was definately on the way out on that one. Glad I moved ahead and got the Shure for more than a fresh stylus. :-)
As they say, if you know your tip is shot and you are not enamored with the overall tonal balance of a cart, might as well kill two birds with one stone.
Follow Ups:
JohnApparently you feel that your record collection is expendable, trivial and or disposable, no ?
How are you making out with the XLM I sold you?"If you can hear it, it's real".
I never said my record collection was expendable, never.I have no magnafying thingy to look at the stylus and had not played this record in quite a while, like at least a year so this was new to me when I discovered the problem a couple of weeks ago.
I had been suspecting for a while that my time may be near and this confirmed just how crucial it was to replace either the styli or the entire cart, cart it was and I went for a more neutral cart - hence the Shure so that has to account for something , right?
Now I don't play vinyl like I had and it also sat for a year and a half while the stylus was still fairly new between 2002-2003. I may not spin any tunes at all for days before spinging something for a short period so the stylus that I had on the Ort was not wearing out as quickly as it normally would otherwise.
JohnUnfortunately despite being Diamonds the incredible amount of force applied to the microscopic area of the stylus foot print and the resultant friction and heat they do indeed wear a cheap SDisco Conical may have a life expectancy of 200 hr's the OM 10 Elliptical
I'd assume would have about an 800 hr lifespan properly cleaned records and stylus hygiene may extend that 150 hr's.At any rate once a Stylus is worn out they become destructive to the vinyl groove, worn Styli are all destructive period, the degree of destructiveness depends on the Stylus configuration it's quality and the degree of care that went into polishing and mounting it.
Some stylus configurations when sufficiently worn are just like the the cutting tool in a lathe and in just a couple of plays will have
effectively removed most or avan all of the records life and dynamic
qualities all the HF's etc..The only reliable and safe stylus replacement policy is replacement based on operating hours, a cheap ($5 ? or less, punch it once every side you play) golf stroke counter works great.
Waiting for audible sounds of wear is not real slick, as a totally shot cartridge may not sound like anything and what you're actually hearing is your now toasted records.
Fred,I realize that.
What I should clarify in a seperate post is that I can't always replace things like a stylus that costs $40 at exactly 800 hours or so.
Plus, as I've indicated, I had suspect something was up, some things I didn't notice until recently and not that I was looking for it per se but have begun to notice.
I'm poor as dirt and replaced the stylus as soon as I could afford to, and while I was at it, replaced the whole cart with sone that sonically speaking is more suited to my table.
Now I don't spin music every day, be it vinyl or CD for many reasons and non due to sound of my system. Just that I don't always think to and that can go on for 2-3 days at a time.
That said, I have been spinning vinyl even less so I figured the stylus that was on the Ortofon would last "longer" ie, how long it took to wear down than it would if I spun an LP per night 7 days a week at min.
When I replaced the stylus the first time on the Ortofon, I did so at what I thought was about the 800 or so hour mark (roughly a year's use I thought) and the guy who sold me the new tip said it was almost to the point of damaging my vinyl at that point. Times have been rough over the past year and a half or I'd have replaced it much sooner than I did.
Like I said, I had suspicions and now I know how far it may have actually gone.
