Hold on a minute. Although mastering makes a BIG difference, the digital process still leaves a little to desire. As one of the original engineers involved with what led to redbook digital, my main complaints center around 1.it's finite dynamic reference points which severely limits it's usable range, and 2.the apparent lack of resolution within it's harmonic structure.
The lack of resolution is most likely do to the "throwing-away" of the recordings least significant bits.
Ofcourse, it's plagued with other problems as well. We will need a better understanding of what works and what doesn't in the digital domain if we are to have any real hope of improving it.

Later Gator,
Crank up your talking machine, grab a jar of your favorite "kick-back", sit down, relax, and let the good times roll. The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.
Just to educate.
well, vinyl has limits too. The distortion is more pleasant sounding however than the type you get with digital.
