its magnetic! As demonstrated my the unholy attraction of my cart (a Denon DL-110, MC) to it. It appears that it, and the act of getting the two appart, didn't do anything harmful to the cant/stylus, but the gauge is useless for an MC. Any chance Shure will still replace it for me? I doubt it.

Follow Ups:
My earlier SFG-2 had the same problem, and I later learned that Shure had some batch issues. It affected MC cartridges only; MMs do not have as much of charge in their body assembly to generate sufficient attraction. Shure have since corrected the problem, and now all units are non-magnetic.
There must be something in the files about this. It comes up rather often. Shure goofed. Pitch it.
The SFG 20 uses a steel blade with groove to fit the stylus into. The steel of the gage is ferrous and is attracted by the magnet in the cartridge that rests its stylus in the groove. In what way will this make the vtf reading inaccurate...? I can't think of any way that it will. The scale is still functioning correctly no matter how much pulling force exists between the cartridge and lever. If the cartridge were being pulled against the platter that would obviously interfere with the reading of the scale. But it isn't.
I'm not sure what the concern is here.

THAT'S the problem (not the actual measurement).
I've used this gage with the following carts:
Denon DL103-R
Shelter 501-II
Ortofon Jubilee
Shure V15VxMR
Shure M91ED
ADC QLM MKIII
etc.
Non of these showed undue suspension deflection at the cantilever. My example SFG-2 shows mild attraction to a magnet placed directly against it. I just don't see the problem you guys speak of.
stronger magnets. The stylus was completely collapsed; trapped between the gauge and the cart.I don't know about all the other carts you mention, but my Shure was OK and the Benz wasn't.
the the SFG-2 that you have is more sensitive to magnets than is my example. All of the MC carts that I have show very strong magnetic pull when items such as screw drivers come into proximity. Scary the first time because there is a real danger of destroying the cartridge with that much pull. And yet these same cartridges have no problem with my particular SFG-2. Your scale must be more susceptible to magnetic pull than is mine. Perhaps different steel alloys.
Early SFG-2s were magnetic. Later SFG-2s are not. Simple as that.
"Early SFG-2s were magnetic. Later SFG-2s are not. Simple as that."Anyone reading this thread should be able to reach that conclusion.

I have that very guage which I got oh, 5 years ago or so. So far I've used it and it works well and is not affected by the carts I've used on it.The Ort Super OM-10 and just the other day, a Shure M97xE
But as others have said, MC's may be more succeptable to it than MM's, such as both of my carts.
I'm sure it's still magnetic, but uses an alloy that does not interfere much, if at all with any cart used with it.
Ruby Open Air got sucked down onto my Shure just being close to it (powerful magnets in the Benz and an open body just asking for trouble).I called Shure and asked for one of those 'aluminum' versions you hear about occasionaly on the VA. And they said, "What aluminum version, never made anything but the steel one. And there's no problem with Shure cartridges." I said, Yah, I know there isn't, but my Benz shure (pun) doesn't like it.
Any way, get a digital one and don't bother with the Shure. The digital one for sale on A'goN for under $100 (like the Acoustech version for $185) is great.
garage where I have a strong magnet. It is in fact slightly magnetic. It's some sort of alloy. I didn't have a problem with my cartrige though.
Instead of tossing it. Why don't you give it to someone who needs one. Just a suggestion.
were made of steel rather than the non-magnetic steel they have since used. Mine is in the yellow box rather than the grey box, from the early 70's I'd guess.

Toss it, and buy a cheap digital one.
