In Reply to: Well this was pretty much a page of useless drivel tonight. I guess I'll go spin some vinyl with my new cartridge :-) posted by Ray-o-Stat on September 14, 2006 at 19:29:33:
My dear wife just put on the Sound of Music Soundtrack, which we got for $2.50 last weekend, unopened. Oh well, she's enjoying it a lot and I will do ANYTHING to keep her going with me to used record stores!Maybe I can convince her to put on Coltrane Favorite Things next for a comparison of Coltrane vs. Julie Andrews!
Follow Ups:
That's creeping me out.
that it's the real deal, not some '24 Hour Church of Elvis'(for all you Portlanders!). They have a website, and offer t-shirts for sale to help in the financial support. For those who don't know,Coltrane was a deeply religious man who believed his musical talents were a gift from God. Check out "A Love Supreme" where he melds his music with a desire for a closer relationship with his God.
Were you aware of the fact that there's a Church of Coltrane ?
" St. John Coltrane African Orthodox Church "I remember back when I first walked past it, and did a double take
it was next door the the City Lights Bookstore (San Francisco, Birthplace of the Beat Generation)Julie Andrews and John Coltrane, The essence of Culture Shock !
I remember as a 13 yr old how ripped off I felt sitting through the entirety of Mary Poppins and realizing the hadn't been even one gratuitous beaver shot in the flying scenes ;-)
I picked it up last week. It sounds great even in mono.
"It sounds great even in mono."
mine is in stereo. And ping pong stereo at that. So your probably right. My Miles Davis Porgy and Bess is Columbia 6 eye mono version that sound so wonderful. I somehow got them mixed up since I bought them both last week. Maybe I'll run into a mono version of My Favorite Things. It's still a great album though.
I showed my wife this post, and she just looked up My Favorite Things in our KeepTrak database, and it also appears on Grant Green's The Complete Quartets with Sonny Clark, so we're listening to that version now and will turn to Coltrane next! Imagine comparing Julie Andrews to Grant Green to Coltrane?!Confession - my Complete Quartets is on CD, so I may not qualify for this post right now. Hope I don't get banished to Digital Drive by a certain . . . oh nevermind. Back to the music!
A couple of those lps came out postumously, and only in Japan. Also there are a few extra tracks on the CD collection. Bottom line, you might not be listening to Sonny Clark and Grant Green at all right now were it not for the joys of digital. Enjoy. Wish I were at home listening, too-

That's the very reason I got into vinyl. (only about four months ago) I knew that there were too many great recordings that were never put on CD. As my system progressed, I realized that I like analog better, but that will never cause me to sell off my digital equipment. I don't want to sell myself short on the music thats available to me. I also don't want to give up my collection of Cd's which is about 800. My original goal was to get about 100 records that I could enjoy. Just after four months I've got about 140 and going strong. One thing I like is finding vinyl for cheap instead of paying $16 for anew Cd.
This is the vinyl asylum, for chrissakes.
