OMG, I just pulled a very nice looking mono pressing of More of the Monkees on the original Colgems label and played a track that has been a real problem for me in recent years. The song is On the Day We Fall in Love where Davey Jones semi whispers/sings the entire song.It used to be just fine but some years ago, probably a decade or so now, it developed a raspiness in the vocals and even the Ortifoon Super OM-10 could not fully rectify it but did make it somewhat better.
Well, with speakers on, 'phones clamped to my ears, I just played that track and there was no mistracking whatsoever while playing said song. Non and I was listening for the sections that were really bad. Nada, clear and clean all the way through. I could actually make out virtually all of the lyrics sung too.
Now to pull out the Monkees LP that contains Shades of Gray, I think off of Headquarters?. Without the LP at hand, I don't recall. And I think it's also a mono pressing too.
And I've never had an issue with this on Mono pressings but I think it is more of an anamaly with these two for how the song was cut than anything else and possibly some dirt got into the grooves but the vinyl looks very black to me (and shiny too).
When you guys have indicated the Shure is a great tracker, you guys is right. :-)
Follow Ups:
and you might get your virtual head bitten off.
Hey, yeah--I have MOTM and I really like it, even though the only decent copy I have is a Rhino reissue.
FWIW, the first time I played "Words" (from another Monkees album, Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, and Jones LTD ) on my rig is the first time I've ever heard that song with out any sibilance.

It must be your fault I awakened with this running through my head:I thought love was only true in fairy tales
Meant for someone else but not for me.
Love was out to get me
Thats the way it seemed.
Disappointment haunted all my dreams. Then I saw her face, now Im a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind.
Im in love, Im a believer!
I couldnt leave her if I tried.I thought love was more or less a given thing,
Seems the more I gave the less I got.
Whats the use in tryin?
All you get is pain.
When I needed sunshine I got rain. Then I saw her face, now Im a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind.
Im in love, Im a believer!
I couldnt leave her if I tried.Holy macaroni! Neil Diamond wrote that! Sheesh!
If I had more money, I'd soon be broke...but I'd have more LP's!
Sorry 'bout that Mike. :-)I love that song and yes, I'm well aware that Neil wrote it. He does a good version of it but I think the Monkees did a better job though. :-)
I have all four of their first LPs on both CD and vinyl.
"Her name was Joanne" appealed to me...and still does.Ah...nothing like an older woman showing you the stairs leading to her bedroom...memories. I was SOOO in love with this Dutch woman...twelve or so years my senior. Damn! Don't ya just hate hearing songs that you identify with because of what's going on in your life at the time you first hear them?
Thank God her name was Anna!
Her name was Joanne
And she lived in a meadow
By a pond
And she touched me for a moment
With a look that spoke to me
Of her sweet love. Then the woman that she was
Drove her on with desperation
And I saw, as she went
A most hopeless situation
For Joanne and the man
And the time that made them both runShe was only a girl
I know that well, but still I could not see
That the hold that she had
Was much stronger than the love
She felt for meBut staying with her
And my little bit of wisdom
Broke down her desires
Like a light through a prism
Into yellows and blues
And the tune that I could not have sungThough the essence is gone
I have no tears to cry for her
And my only thoughts of her
Are kindHer name was Joanne
And she lived in a meadow by a pond
And she touched me for a moment
With a look that spoke to me
Of her sweet loveThen the woman that she was
Drove her on with desperation
And I saw as she went
A most hopeless situation
For Joanne and the man
And the time that made them both runFor Joanne and the man
And the time that made them both run
If I had more money, I'd soon be broke...but I'd have more LP's!

claim others track better. And the cartridge may be riding in a slightly different groove, not allowing you to hear the worn part (not visible often).I was playing a Mozart LP of Bruno Walter the other day, and the first 2/3 was fine, but the person who owned the LP must have liked the last 2 overtures and may have had a mistracking cartridge and arm. They were raspy as you stated.
I will wait until I replace my Linn K9 with my new Shure V15VxMR to decide.
Just curious. I am using that cart on my MMF-7 and I'm very happy with it.
because the Linn K9 had low hours. It sounded a bit hazy at first due to my not playing records for a while (10 years?), but I got back into it and once the suspension loosened back, it sounded pretty good. So I am trying to wear it out a bit. Sounds neutral, out of the way.Usually, people bid up to $300 to 400 on ebay for one like mine, never opened.
