Hello All,What do you guys recommend? I read some of the earlier email regarding these tables and some of it was too complicated for a newbie like me to understand. I'm looking to spend around $500. What's the best sounding/functioning TT for my money? (Looks like the Rega P1 is available for around $350, cartridge included, and the Technics would be around $460 with a cartridge.)
p.s. I live in a house with kids running around, i.e. lots of vibrations on the floor, and a lots of dust, if that makes a difference.
Thanks in advance
Sincerely,
dw

Consider it from an economical point of view. The SL-1200 has been there for ages, all NRE written-off a hundredfold, and did not even raise
its price significantly in that time. At the other side manufacturers like Rega have been pressed into increasing price and/or reducing engineering contents/quality to maintain a given price. At a certain point many will conclude that an SL-1200 (MkII, not the others!) starts making a lot of sense. And it does sound pretty good, given a sympathetic cartridge.

Technics, it will last a lifetime.
Read one of my posts below. It was in response to a Music Hall
MMF-5 and the 1210 comparison. I would expect the MMF-5 to be near
the Rega P2 in performance...I guess... I am still VERY
happy with the 1210M5G and I got it for $459 ... :-)

Used a Moth Alamo S--essentially an upgraded Rega P1--for nearly three years.
And I've been using a Technics SL-1210 since spring.
The Moth is for sale.
There are a couple of other options. You could by a decent used deck. And then there's this....

you make since I don't think anyone has even heard a "stock" P1. It has not reached retailers as of yet.
The P1 is the old, now discontinued P2. MDF plinth, MDF platter, RB-250 tonearm, same belt drive system. As far as I know, the same ridiculous motor-mounting system.
The Moth Alamo S is a P2 with an acrylic platter, RB250 tonearm, OL end-stub and CW, and Incognito wiring.
The Technics's superiority was obvious from the first cut of the first album I played on it, as a result the Moth is for sale.

The little Denon would be a good choice.

Really?! wow that's a tough one. Well if you still insist...If I have 500 I'll get a thorens. Is the budget includes a phono stage?maybe you can setup your table on a shelf mounted on the wall, corner if possible to avoid much of the vibrations from the floor.
