Despite only having just installed the thing this morning, but I can already discern even more clearly than before the lyrics of the song as it plays.Just got through playing I'm Hip by the romantics and I'd not noticed some of the lyrics before now.
Also, my not so clear sounding copy of Do You Wanna Make Love by Peter McCann on the 20th Century release 7" 45 was much clearer and cleaner than when I played it with the Ortofon, but unfortunately, it has some groove anomallies that cause even the Shure to jump ahead in a couple of spots. :-(
Don't get me wrong, the Ortofon was a huge improvement in and of itself but this Shure just ups the ante and it's barely even broken in! :-)
Follow Ups:
I've had some other more expensive cartridges (not the V15-IV though.) but that m97xe is the best all-arounder I've owned. It's a great tracker & a killer bargain.I had an OM-20 Super before, which is a good budget performer, but I picked up the Shure on the suggestion of fellow inmate Fred. (thanks, Fred!)
I used to own the M97HE, the predecessor of the XE. I remember it was a musical cartridge, a little "rounded" in it's presentation, and not extended in the high range compared with the V-15 VMR.
.
The Super OM-10.Upon checking out the specs of it and the Super OM-20, I really didn't need the extended high end due to the "voicing" of the table itself, bright to begin with as it's a mass market Kenwood
JohnI think the M97 is a great Cartridge period as it gets out of the way of the Music like it's V15 siblings, does everything well, fine choice.
I would suggest however don't bother looking at Cartridge specs beyond Mass and Compliance (physical perimeters)as the FR curves don't tell you the real story most of the time, in the case of the OM 20 is a inherently very listenable, musical and engaging cartridge more or less the standout in the OM line, the OM 40 is a better tracker (so is the M97 BTW )and considerably more sophisticated but at 2- 3 X the price, and not necessarily more listenable unless you have a higher end more resolving system.
the OM 10 is a an OK, but more or less lack lustre Cart. a World of difference IMHO.
Fred,As far as the Ort Super OM-10 is concerned, it's quite detailed and a decent tracker. It's only caveat is it's bright, and on a table that tends to be on the bright side itself, it was not the best choice overall. I got a lot out of it in the 6 years I had it so it was pretty worth it. If it had been on a more neutral table, it'd have done better sonically speaking.
I agree, the Shure simple doesn't get in the way and give me even more detail than the Ort gave and it gave me a lot.

I've tried everything to get it to sound good and nothing helps, my AT12s kills it in every area.
Those '80's Audio Technica's are great aren't they? I just resurrected a Mk12sII with a brand new ATS12S stylis and put it on my tonearm this week. Very nice musicial sound from this 25 year old cartridge.
I even tried the at12s stylus in a At3500 series and it sounds killer tracks like a mother including Lp's that the Shure couldn't. My biggest grip with the shure is I had to crank the volume knob on my Adcom 565 to around the 1:30 postion to get decent volume not with any of these At's or My Ortofon F15e . Yes these are keepers. SGHHHHHHHHHHH don't tell anybody cause stylus are hard to find and getting harder well to get one at a decent price lol. I paid with shipping 15 bucks for mine from ebay a couple of weeks ago I was shocked no one else bid on it.
seems to be a mismatch between your Adcom and the cartridge output that many love. Did your preamp hum at the 130 position and how loud are your desiring to play music and its genre?
