In Reply to: How often does an equipment change lead to "dramatic, night and day" sound changes for you? posted by jsm on September 12, 2006 at 18:25:02:
I was over at a friend's place, and we were listening to LPs and CDs.The CDs sounded good but the LPs were mediocre.
The system:
Basis 2500/Graham 2/Helikon
Legend Audio electronics
Totem speakersThe LP sound just wasn't there--bland and lifeless. After a couple of hours, we decided to try something. We swapped in a different power chord for the phono stage.
Yes, night and day! The sweet sound of vinyl is back!
It beats me how a power chord could make such a dramatic difference in the entire musical structure, but it did. We are both experienced audiophiles who have listened to hundreds of systems, but anyone would have heard this.
Follow Ups:
Night and day. Dramatic difference. From that I would assume anyone could hear the difference. Is that true? Now the test. The next time you go to your friend's house, have him put one or the other power cords in, but not tell you. Better yet, get a third friend to do the swapping while you both are out of the room. Make sure you can't see the power cord being used (and not being used). If the differences are dramatic, with 100% accuracy you should be able to identify which power cord is in place rather quickly. I know people around here poo-poo blind tests, but if there is truly a dramatic difference, it should be easy to identify blind.Note that I am not saying that you didn't hear a big improvement. However, a dramatic improvement should be easy to identify blind, and doing so might really impress the skeptics if done carefully.

The difference is said to be dramatic. This should be no problem for a DBT. Even the biggest de-bunkers of DBT must admit that, if the difference between A and B is dramatic, night and day, it should be easy to pick out in a DBT. Here's a way to prove to all those power cable skeptics that they really make a big difference. There's no way the test can fail if the difference is truly dramatic.
...if the change in sound is that dramatic from a power cord change, then the difference in the AC wave should be visible on a scope at the phono stage, right? I mean, we're talking about a wave that's going to be 99+% filtered out.An interesting experiment would be to hook pieces of equipment to an AC generator where the wave can be altered in minor ways and see how sensitive different components are to variation.

Electricity travels hundreds of miles through industrial grade wire and switching equipment, chosen for its ability to withstand the elements and for low maintenance. You're trying to tell me that some great mischief happens in the last three feet between the wall outlet and your equipment. Think about it. This makes no sense at all.

Crank up your talking machine, grab a jar of your favorite "kick-back", sit down, relax, and let the good times roll. The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.
I changed my recep to an Arrow Hart Hospital grade recep and could hear a difference for the better. It makes no sense to me either, but it worked. I no longer laugh at such posts. Unfortunately CJ uses fixed power chords.
I only use my gun whenever kindness fails
CJ uses fixed
