In Reply to: Saxophone Colossus, digital or analog remastering? posted by beto1 on September 10, 2006 at 15:18:49:
There was a fairly recent thread on the Steve Hoffman forum about whether OJC reissues were from analog or digital masters and Steve opined that the vast majority were analog.
Follow Ups:
Hi mtodde,
it's possible, because some others OJC did not claim that were remastered. This particular Saxophone Colossus is not the case; was remastered "recently".

Beto
The album was remastered in 1975 and repackaged as two-record set, Saxophone Colossus and More .
Not many record companies were doing digital mastering in 1975, I doubt that Fantasy Records were.
And that remaster is thin and bright sounding without much bass. I have a copy.
Not that it matters. The music more than makes up for it.

Hi,
mine was remastered by Phil de Lancie on 1987, I don't know if use the original analog or if remaster a digital master, but for sure not soud as good as the Bridge. I did not espect that a 10 dollars record sound as a 30 dollars record, but I believe that is not analog. No matter the weight, I have some 70's records, in normal weight, that sound absolutelly great, especially english and japanese pressings.

Beto
The German pressing OJC's are a bit on the thin side (I have Art Pepper with the Rhythm Section pressed in Germany) whether analog or digital. That is probably at least part of the problem. I avoid the German OJC's.
