In Reply to: No seriously, why does my Rega SUCK? posted by Sylvian on September 10, 2006 at 12:36:54:
Well I just bought a TD-111 so I will see.
I have modded my NAD533 in ways that have really improved it but I will see. There have been a few posts, one a head to heard with different Thorens, and the Thorens comes out on top.I will probaly never go as far as to say that this NAD has ever SUCKed. Too inflamatory, for one. But it does produce music in a sweet way. That won't change even if the Thorens turns out to be better.
I did hear a Thorens TD-165 about a month ago and it did have more 'weight' than the NAD, which may translate to 'timber'. Oh, god, I hope I never hear a Technics 1200 because the ammount of crow I will then have to eat will choke the hell out of me! :-)

OMalley: I'm not saying my Rega SUCKS to be inflammatory. I'm saying it SUCKS because it SUCKS. I remember reading comments from time to time about the Rega's sounding like a cd player, and that's what it sounds like. So I'm not sure if I just have a sucky sample, or if they really suck like this (unless you start piling on expensive commercial tweaks)."TIMBRE" is not weight. It's the tonal coloration that gives musical instruments/voices their true characteristics. Reduce it and things start to sound too much alike, and there goes your connection to the music. That's why a lack of timbre = a lack of "musicality". Just on paper, if not by the looks of it, an arm such as the RB-250 should yield excellent timbre, or at least v. good. That's not the case here, I find. BTW, I'd say the P2 has a lot more "weight" than the Thorens 150 (more powerful attack/dynamics, more authoritative bass, larger image, etc). But the Thorens has better timbre and so is more musical.
I have added improvements to the NAD. All things do not sound the 'same'on it. It has 'timbre' and depth. I did not listent to the TD-165 long enough and it was not set up correctly to make real comparisons, anyway.Maybe instead of saying that your Rega SUCKED you could say that you were not able to make it sound good, which is really what the truth is.
I don;t think that my NAD "kicks ass" or any assinine shit like that. It does not "trounce" the competition. What a joke all that is. It does play sweetly with seriously improved pace and timing due to the upgrades. It presents different recordings differently and it doesn't make everything sound the 'same'.
Should it have sounded good out of the box. Yeah. Should you have to upgrade it? That is a problematic question around these parts. Were you able to improve it? No.

Assuming your NAD has the same RB250 and is the same as my glass-plattered P2, then that's at least a glimmer of hope, in't it.

No, BOTH of those statements are EQUALLY true, at present time. And I can't say "I was not able to make it sound good", since I didn't even check to see if the spindle/tonearm bearings or motor assembly was in good order. That's because no one responded to my request for info on that.

Doesn't that depend on what the competition is? If the competition is my P2, it sounds like it does trounce it!
**Should it have sounded good out of the box. Yeah. **Yeah, it should have, by me.
**Should you have to upgrade it? **
No, I shouldn't! It SHOULD get the basics, musicality, right! Otherwise, why buy a tt, you're better off with a CD player than this deck.

I think the problematic question around these parts seems to be: "How do I check for and fix bearings in the RB250/P2 spindle or motor assembly?".
or upgrade the subplatter and add some tweaks to the arm. don't forget to get a good base for isolation and replace the feet.changing the bearings is i didn't do as yet. there was recent post on where to get good bearings linked below
