Hi, I have a Pro-Ject 2 Xperience turntable with Pro-Ject 9'' carbon arm and Benz Micro Ace MC cartridge connected to a Benz Lucaschek PP1 phonostage in my 2 channel systemI'm thinking of moving/connecting this turntable/tonearm to my H/T system located in the living room (my Denon AVR-3805 A/V receiver has a MM phono input therefore I would need to get a new MM cartridge maybe Grado Platinium or Reference Sonata?) and get a new turntable/tonearm dedicated to the 2 channel system located in a seperate room
I'm thinking of any of the following combinations (aprox prices from the net)
* Pro-Ject RPM-10 with Pro-Ject 10'' carbon arm 2500$
* Clearaudio Champion Level 1 2500$ plus arm or Level 2 3500$ plus arm (but would need to stretch the budget for that one!)
* VPI Scoutmaster with JMW-9 2500$
* VPI Aries 3 with JMW-9 3400$
* Mitchell GyroDec SE 2300$ plus arm
* Rega P7 with RB-700 2600$Please share your experience if you own or auditioned any of those. Any A/B comparison? Any recommendation on turnatble not listed above is most welcome
I'm thinking of keeping the Benz Micro Ace MC cartridge for the new turntable/tonearm but I would also greatly appreciate if you could give your recommendation on other MC cartridges (max 1000-1500$). I listen mostly to classical, opera, jazz, fusion, vocals, world music and I enjoy sweet natural sounding
Rest of my system listed on the Inmates systems
Follow Ups:
Hi,I auditioned a Nottingham Space Deck and Ace Space Arm about a month ago. Very nice but $3k. At a minimum I would add that one to your list. So far I haven't been able to lay eyes on the RM-10 but it certainly looks interesting. Sumiko told me last Friday that they are starting to get some samples out to reviewers. As far as I can tell, no one in DC/Baltimore area has one on display. I'm still looking, though.
As I'm a newbie to high-end analog, I can't help you with your selection.But, I can suggest that moving your old table to the Denon is going to be a waste of time. I tried using my turntable with my Denon 5800's phono imput. The sound was totally lifeless, causing me to shelve my turntable for 4 or 5 years. You would be better off selling the old equipment rather than hooking it up to the Denon. Or, if you do hook it up, use a separate phono preamp -- don't use the one in the Denon.
answers will arrive. Pay close attention, some of the old tables are awesome with the right arm cartridge and 20% cost of your proposals.Matching is most critical, research the posts as often the best match is not the manufacturers recomendation..sure they take care and research but other economic factors play into their choices.
I run an Alphason arm with Shelter 501 II through a Rogue stealth and it is awesome. I would rather save on the TT and also be sure I have a great phonostage that can do justice to the cartridge. Also consider going up the benz line to a micro L2 wood, 2nd hand at audiogon can come out of TT savings.
consider building a phono pre such as seduction (MM) or Cornet 2 (MM/MC)
I tried using a turntable with the MM phono input on my Denon AVR-4802 A/V receiver and was not happy with the results. I highly recommend that along with a 2nd MC cartridge for your Project TT you also get a 2nd relatively inexpensive MC phonostage, i.e. used Rega Fono MC, and then connect the phonostage into one of the other (non-phono) inputs on your A/V receiver.I can't comment on the other turntables on your list but I'm using a Clearaudio Champion basic along with an Eastern Electric MiniMax phono preamp on my 2 channel system and I'm very pleased with the results.
.
I am using an Eastern Electric Minimax Phonostage also. The Minimax goes into a Proton HT preamp. I am very pleased with my sound too!
