After the drama of the Scoutmaster and picking up a Rega P3 because I got a really good deal on it, I'm back where I belong. Sitting in my basement is a new Technics SL1210Mk5, waiting to be unboxed and assembled. I feel complete again. Tonight? Playing all the records I can with my choice of carts. Might play three or four different carts, just because I can. Life is good again.
Follow Ups:
loving it. Stopped and picked up some records on the way home (including a mint Neil Young "After The Gold Rush"). lots of fun...everyone is happy here :)

Hi James. Good to hear you have it set up and spinning records! Take care of it and it should give you many years of trouble free service.
Merle, I bought a SM about 1 month before you did. At first listen, I wasn't sure I had made an upgrade from my Music Hall MMF-7. The SM had better PRAT, but that seemed to be all that it had. Then I bought a Dynavector 20xl and put on the SM in place of the Goldring Elite which i had taken off the 7 and put on the SM as a temperary measure. I put it back on the 7. The Dyna made me realize that the Elite was not a good match for the SM. It is a good match on the 7. Then I played a bit with the VTA which made it even better. I then built a sandbox for the SM. Again more improvement. I still wasn't sure that the SM would trounce my 7, so I a/b'd the 2. At first I thought the 7 was gonna hang in there. And it did, till about the second verse when it became obvious that the 7 was no match for the SM. It lacked bass, PRAT, and a sense of presence which the SM has in spades. The 7 sounded thin in comparison. Don't get me wrong. The MMF-7 IMO is still the best bargain in its class IMO. There's a good reason for it being Stereophile's bargain component of the year. it is good, but the ScoutMaster outclassed it. But I wasn't sure at first. It took time to get the bugs worked out. But my persistance paid off.
Meanwhile, I'm glad you are satisfied with your new table also

I have no doubt the Scoutmaster is a very fine table. As you show in your post, it requires proper care and feeding. In the end, it was more care and feeding than I could offer. I have no illusions that the Technics is the better table, just the better table for ME.

Just warming up the RCM... get some choice cuts clean for later on myself.Only the one cartridge for me, so more time for tunes.
Have fun,
