I presently have two Technics tables- an SL Q2 and an SL D2. I mostly use the D2 because it is the black version and looks great with my system. Both are in great condition. I recently saw an SL 1700 for sale cheap. it is a bit older than my tables and I don't know the condition. Is it worth buying? Or should I stick with what I have and upgrade the stylus on my V15III? my other cartridge is a Shure M97 with two styli bought new (not original Shure) the N97HE and the N97ED. Should I bother spending money on the V15 or are these good enough? Thanks.

If its a MKI is uses mechanical linkages to auto return the tonearm, if its a MKII it may need its little belt replaced, which is easy. The MKII, IMO, is a much nicer table. It is quartz-locked vs. servo, is a suspended sub-plinth design, and has the same arm with VTA on the fly as the 1200MKII.
I would hold out for a MKII table..
1600MKII - full auto
1700MKII - semi auto
1800MKII - manual (Alot like the 1200MKII but without the big pitch slider control, and uses TNRC suspended sub-plinth instead of rubber like inner-plinth.I suspect having the drive and arm units rigidly coupled to this sub-plinth makes for a livelier sound then the mondo internally damped 1200's.
The 1700s like the other auto and semi-auto SLs are great IF the deck is in good condition. There is a belt that operates the arm and it can be problematical.Might check with inmate Scottrt as he has restored these tables.
Re the carts, the V15III Jico SAS stylus has gotten rave reviews. Performance is said to better the original Shure stylus. Jicos are the only aftermarket styli for Shures that I would consider.
I hope they come out with one for my Ultra 500 before the current VN5MR Shure stylus wears out.

The Shure V15 III is a fairly high compliance cartridge, if your tonearm is compatible, get the JICO SAS Stylus and you'll find it
obviously perceptible upgrade on the M97.BTW The cheap $35 to $50 Generic Stylus will just turn the V15 III
into a real turd, the M97 or just about any cartridge will smoke.
