Jack Sheldon. A member of the great (and greatly underappreciated!) Curtis Counce Group who went on to be Merv's sidekick. But Jack never stopped blowing the living crap out of his horn--he's still at it, playing about 6-8 local gigs a month here in L.A. And he's ENTERTAINING!! You will ALWAYS have a ball at a Jack Sheldon gig! In between the jokes and stories you will hear some GREAT jazz!
Follow Ups:
excellent players!
Nice...Jazz West...near impossible label to find in any decent condition...Saw Sheldon live with Woody Herman in 1983 (partially released on "A Great American Evening" on Concord) and he tore the joint up, taking our breath away with incredible solos and absolutely hysterical commentary. Easily could have been a successful professional comedian.
Used to watch Merv Griffin just for the introductry bits with Sheldon and Ray Brown. I was such a fan of those moments and the verbal (and never often enough musical) interplay I'd sit through Griffin's painful singing. THAT's dedication!
Happy to hear Jack Sheldon is still going strong!

This of course does not help frozen food fans...
Always looking for his records. I even search ebay and he is just not a big presence on vinyl.I will add this one to the list ...
