...is enough?I just bought my 16th Brahms Violin Concerto on vinyl, the Grumiaux with Colin Davis. It's quite good, very slow and stately.
That's not even my personal record. I had 21 Scheherezades when I did that piece for Primyl Vinyl. I discarded two or three of the worst ones afterwards, but since then I have picked up five or six more. Still looking for the Fedoseyev on Melodiya/EMI.
Follow Ups:
That's indeed the syndrome, you see the same old classical warhorses again and again. You know the law of the jam sandwich falling on the ground? It always falls with the jam side down! In vinyl terms: you collect eight (8) versions of the 2nd Rach piano concerto and THEN you see two(2) perfect, NM, original Uk pressing Decca SXLs, a 2000 series and a 6000. For 0.50 euro each. Pass? No way!
I try to keep it at 4 to 5 versions per piece, i'll try to cull a few less interesting versions although sometimes the version on the less desirable label beats all the big name labels. I have a Mozart/Requiem on Concert Hall synchro stereo that is excellent.
"The torture never stops"
Yes - lots of multiples here too. Aside from those listed above add 5 Verdi Traviata's to my list, and talking of Liszt - how many Hungarian Rhapsodies? Even I have no idea.I think I have more Dvorak New World's (as either 5 or 9) than anything else - again not sure how many - 12 maybe..
Then there are 4 Sheherazade's, 3 or more of every Beethoven Symphony, Mendelssohn Italian * 4, Schubert unfinished * 4, 3 or 4 Marriage of Figaro, Barber of Seville, Don Giovani, couple of Tosca's, Madame Butterfly's etc.
It is probably easier to list out the ones I only have one copy of. I dont know why - but this never happened with CD....
You are not along. I have about 30 differnt versions of Vivaldi, "The Four Seasons" in my collection . If you're a Classical fan, here is the good news: There are tons of Classical LPs out there in mint or near mint condition. The cost is from a few cents to a few bucks each. This allows us to buy multiple versions of the same piece.
I spent the other night playing all of my 6 or so versions of the Bach Brandenburg Concerti (even played the "Walter Carlos" version of #3). It never gets old.Is that any weirder than playing the many versions of "Lets Face the Music and Dance" that I probably have in my collection? (Bennett, Sinatra etc etc etc).
and necessary. i started with pictures, then some stravinskys, the planets, fantastique, and copland pieces, and new world symphonies, pieces by dvorak, ETC.tempo and other arrangement anomalies are key here. i hate when the tempos are off on pictures or the planets although variations can be thought provoking. the more familiar you are with a piece, the pickier you can be.
...regards...tr
I have probably 12 different Strauss "Also Sprach Zarathustra" recordings, and nearly as many Copland "Appalachian Spring Suite".I have every Recording of Copland's 3rd symphony I can find, currently 5-6.
Peices that I really like I try to find my favorite version. Unfortunately, the best performance is not usually the best recording and vice versa. So I get all that I can to find the one with what IMO is the best overall balance between recording and performance.
eso
What a piker I feel like, standing in the presence of giants. On vinyl, I've only got four Brandenburgs, four LvB Pastorals, four Scheherazades, four Planets, four Preludes to the Afternoon of a Faun, four Billy the Kids, four Rach second symphonies AND second concertos, and four 1812s.
What's up with that? Other than I have a problem making it past four-play?
To my credit, I do have five New Worlds and six Zarathustras.
Who can resist a different version with a nice cover?
I don't have Fedoseyev version but have Svetlanov version which Leonid Kogan is solo violinist. It is nice recording.
Si.
...recorded at different times. They're pretty common on Melodiya and EMI pressings. The Fedoseyev is something else.....a wild, saveage performance. I had to give the one I used for my article back to its owner.
that minimizes storage issues and "how many of those do you need questions."
I love the 2nd movement , have at least a dozen different LP recordings and don't have a favorite yet. As an earlier poster said, it's like different flavors of ice cream ( or I like to think-Scotch) and some days one is preferable to another. But it's always good. Norm
I only have six of these so far.
But I'll catch up :-)This and Bruckner Symphonies are my favorite classical pieces.
....I was just sorting through the 'played' pile to put them back in their proper locations, and found the Spalding/Loibner Brahms Violin Concerto on Varese/Saraband (reissue of the Remington). So the Grumiaux is actually the 17th. But looking through what I have, I don't see any obvious throw-outs.
...it's impossible to have "enough" versions. The only limitation is space, and I'm fortunate in having lots of space.I just picked up my twelfth version of the Schubert Ninth Symphony, probably the classical piece I have most versions of. I also have four complete sets of the Beethoven piano sonatas, three B Minor Masses, two complete Ring cycles (working on my fourth), four Magic Flutes , and so on. Hey, why not? It's fun to compare performances.
Cheers,Ivan
There are so many great recordings of your favorite pieces of music. I must have a least a dozen recordings of my favorite stuff. Each has a unique flavor of ice cream.I cannot part even with the flavors I do not prefer.
Variety is the spice of life!
For buying, at thrift prices I always pick up a good LP of a piece I like by performers that sound promising.
For keeping, I select the versions that I sometimes want to listen to, because they provide a different perspective on the piece, and one I appreciate. Then for most works I have one (or two) performances I return to more often, but that's fine.
For me, this means almost (?) always remaining in single-digit territory. In practice, I must say that with LPs so far I have earmarked those I don't need but have not actually gotten rid of them because I await to reach a critical mass of culls.
By the way, I have the Grumiaux/Davis Brahms VC and I also like it. Then again, I suppose I am into slow & stately since my reference point is Menuhin/Furtwaengler.
The killer is....drum roll, please...Handel Messiahs! How many does one need?I've culled at least 4 or 5 doubles and still own (I think) 9 different ones of 'em! Now that's absurd! But if I found another at a yard sale or while on a roll at a flea market I'd buy it. I'm a sicko, but thankfully I'm a sicko among many other sickos!
We are merely restraint-challenged --- or was it moderation-impaired?
