I don't know what! From the picture of the kitchen counter area, I would have guessed that this is a fella who is not married and has an antique electronic fetish!! But, once I saw the ID, I did an about face...
I scanned the pictures in hopes of seeing parts for a 698, but saw none. I am tempted to email him (her?) and ask... about headshells ;2).
What do you make of it? I am not familiar with that "vintage" electronics. BTW, IMHO the rating he gave as to the condition of the 598 seemed a bit inflated, no?
Oh, yeah. While I have you, does your motor make a humming sound? Mine has started... or maybe just gotten loud enough for me to hear. I know nothing about lubricating such a motor as this. Your thoughts? Maybe I will email grinagog and ask for his suggestions too...
Thanks for this interesting listing... I missed it.
Phil
Follow Ups:
the 3 rubber grommet motor mounts getting hard with age so motor vibration gets transfered, I replaced mine and it was quieter. There was a guy on fleabay selling replacements.
I think that is where my noise is.
I emailed the guy I bought mine from to see if he still carried them and he responded that I had bought the last 3 sets he had (I did 2 598's and 1 698). He didn't know anyone right off that might have more. Hopefully someone still stocks them as they are not regular grommets.
Let me check it out...I emailed the company I think has (or at least did have) them and CC'd it to you, FYI.
Merry Christmas,
Phil
Phil- Just about any well stocked Hardware store will have small oilers, I recommend the deluxe version, they're Aluminum look like an old style fountain pen you fill it with the lube of choice, I've found a quality multi viscosity Synthetic motor oil is close to perfect for just about anything, particularly motor bushings. The oiler has a steel needle and you push the button on the top
to feed the oil it's quite slick, very elegant and handy as hell once you've had one you'll wonder how you ever got by without one.Avoid the cheap plastic oilers already filled with oil they suck and the oil is just some low rent 3 in one.
the flex neck is probably too clunky for this job.I have some German clock oil in an elegant needle topped bottle that should do the trick just fine... I have been a bit timid when it comes to working on the Empire because the 698 could be considered rare and motors are probably scarcer than hen's teeth!
Merry Christmas!
Phil
I can hear mine run (very low level), but never paid much attention to it because it is so low. I lubed the upper bearing when I had to take mine apart after UPS trashed the motor mount. I just used what was recommended by the manufacturer, the 3 in 1 oil. Just a drop!
how did you get it apart? Did you have to (heaven forbid) have to pull the pully? Do I even need to take it apart? I'd rather not, cause my track record with motors hasn't been stellar :2[Phil
What happened with mine was the package was dropped so hard, the plate the motor mounts to broke. At least it was packed correctly, so no other damage, but there was no support under the heavy motor, so....If you look there are 3 screws, the one with top threaded adjustable nut, and 2 others. just remove those, motor is loose. And I believe there is enough wiring harness to move it all around without breaking anything.
Ok, that doesn't sound too hard. Are there oil holes?
Don't remember seeing any, just lubed it down the shaft under the pulley. Actually just looked at mine, you could probably reach the top bearing with a drop of oil on a toothpick or something.
I've got to go to bed, as my eyes are starting to feel as if they had sand in them... 54 years old and can't party like I used to! Darn shame...Merry Christmas, we're off to Hawaii so I can get over my cold (not the real reason, but it will work).
Have fun, found some great stuff when I was there (Marantz 8B one owner).
A little overrated condition, but still nice looking. I would still like to come up with another 698 or a 598. When I win the lottery or something! They are really getting up there in price. Lucky to have one I guess (I KNOW!!).Been playing with some different tubes in the Bellari stage, amazing how different tubes change the sound. And tubes are cheaper than cartridges!!
MDirect catalogue; the one with the brunette lounging in front of the AVID stack? If I had it all to do over again, AND I had gotten this catalogue before I ordered the Bugle, I might have made a different decision!
I don't know, the Bugle is really spoken of highly on the forum. Right now I'm playing some Herb Alpert "Rise" through it burning in a new tube. Still amazing, different tubes, different sound. The bad thing about the stock Bellari is the gain. But I bought an ElectroHarmonix and Tung-sol tube, got a big gain increase.
I was playing my Acom Xcoil through it stock, had enough gain for that at 2.3 mv in. My Shure V15IV sounds really good with the Tung-sol tube. Waiting on a pair of Mesa SPAX7's I won on ebay to come in.
Yeah, I finally looked closely at the ad to see that it isn't for MC carts, so I suppose I am not in the market.I dodged the bullet of needing a "head amp" or tranny by building the high gain version of the Bugle. It sounds great... why am I even thinking about anything else??? I am sick... that's why I'm here, right?
