Hi
I have the opportunity to buy a like new Ariston 11s deck with a SME 3009 arm (I dont know which version) for $375.00. Is this a good price. Is the Ariston a good sounding table....Thanks
Follow Ups:
I purchased an SME 3009 Series II Improved for 375.00 and a Series III for about 350.00.Both are really wonderful arms for high compliance cartridges like my Grado.
The Series I and Series II non improved arms are characterized by having a detachable headshell. This detachment fitting makes these arms heavier, and puts them in the medium mass tonearm category. This is a good thing for many cartridges on the marketplace.
Do a search on SME and you will find a wealth of information on these outstanding arms.
Check what shape the motor and the bearings are in. It must be at least 20-30 years old, so be careful. It was my first audiophile tt. I think I paid about what you're paying. If it's in good shape, you'll be happy. Usually they come with a Grace arm, though...

I have just bought an Ariston RD11 ...not the 'S' version..with an SME 3009 Series 2 arm also fitted with an Empire 1000.
They say that the Ariston RD11 was the forerunner of the Linn, now I have recently owned 2 linn LP12's and this turntable is every bit as good as the older Linn. The arm is a true delight when fitted with an appropriate cartridge Shure V15/75ED..Ortofon VMS20..Goldring 1042. Don't worry too much about spares as you can retro fit an awful lot of second hand Linn stuff..plinths..lids..armboards..springs..all fit the RD11..I paid pretty much what you paid and am well pleased!
.
Yes, the RD11 is the original Ariston and looks just like a Linn. The main difference is the platter which is a one piece affair on the 11. The 11S has a different armboard which had a circular mounting point for the tonearm, but has a 2 piece platter just like a linn.
My RD11 has a two-piece platter.
Veeerry Interesting...but Ariston used to make great play on the fact that they used one piece platters, as I say this certainly changed on the 11S model..In fact there is an 11S for sale on E-Bay in the USA and it shows the two pice platter.. Of course I'm sure you could probably fit a Linn platter, might need a different belt. The One piece platter uses the square section belt rather than the flat one
The RD11 Superieur has a one-piece platter, but despite the similar name, isn't built the same as the original RD11.
