He would be 233 years old today. Anybody have a favorite Beethoven record? I'm listening to Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra doing the Fifth, at the moment.
Follow Ups:
.
closely followed by the 9 symphonies by the Philharmonia/Klemperer. Or a Clara Haskil piano concerto on Westminster. Or...
"The torture never stops"
many others
But I just purchased the Karajan 1962 cycle LP set and am eagerly awaiting it's arrival.

By the Quartetto Italiano and the Vlach Quartet. Incomparable playing, eternal music.

Truly, it does not get any better than this, in this world anyway.
Of which I tend to play Oistrakh most often, but then three of them are his.
I'm not at home, so I don't remember the orchestra or the conductor. It is nice, though.
Mine is STPL 516.150 which means it is "remastered for stereo". I hope to find a mono of it one day. IIRC Frankwm knows where this was recorded and originally issued (Melodiya?).

Are you going to change your 'nik to "Melba"?
No, want to 'wind-down' (instead of 'winding-up') the posties. Also, I answered the Beethoven Oistrakh query with a link to the discography of this 1950 performance...about 2 months back.

Hi, Poor Beethoven -- I wonder how his music would have been different if he did not suffer from lead poisoning. Maybe we would not have those challanging and strangely modern last string quartets if he did not suffer so.I have been listening to Karajan's Leonore Overture
DG Bicentennial collection volume 1 -- v. g.Gieseking/von Karajan's Beethoven emperor concerto on Odyssey -- great performance medocre recording -- or maybe it is my record--
And the best of the afternoon Angel Box of Nathan Milstein playing 3 Great Concertos -- I love Nathan Milstein's playing--and it is a beautiful piece of music.
I was going to use the day as an occasion to wash the unprocessed Beethoven in the basement, but have been tinkering around with some cables so it will have to wait.
beautiful music
Cluytens is brilliant in this music, and not too many people know about it ...
