One of the joys of having thousands of records is sometimes finding gems in your collection that you didn't know you had (or, in my case probably just forgot I had). I found one of those tonight. It is titled "Rex Middleton's Hi-Fi's". It is on Verve, MGV-2035. From the label and liner information, I would guess it is from 1957 or so.The group is a black, male quartet and quintet, singing mostly standards like: Moonglow, Undecided, Sometimes I'm Happy, Bernie's Tune, etc. However, they sing with wonderful harmonies and a more uptempo rhythm than usual for the songs.
It is so good, that I was shocked that I hadn't been listening to it at all for all of these years.
Have any of you ever heard of this group or this record? I can't find any information on it.
Follow Ups:
I've always thought how cool it would be to own every Jazz LP ever made, every Jazz 78...I wanted it all and though, deep down inside I knew it wasn't possible, it was a reachable dream to me.Looking at that Jazz Discography site blew my mind! There is no other description I can give...I've tried to look, but it's overwhelming. My jaw is touching the ground!
And all because you wanted to know about a record! I'm so blown away that I can't even kid around and tell you that I'm going to kick your ass (I'd need you to lift my leg up to do it!).
I'm babbling! I'm almost speechless. That's more impressive than looking at a Mosaic catalog, even the Fantasy catalogs of the past...1/2 inch or bigger magazine with hundreds upon hundreds of LPs. Those old catalogs are nothing, nothing!
It's one thing to know that Miles Davis was very prolific...to see all of those LP and 78s listed; the cuts, all of the members of the band...info overload!
And now I have to go to bed with that on my mind? The hell with it, I AM going to kick your ass! Remind me tomorrow that I'm supposed to do it!
Now I can't remember what it was. :-)Do you have jazz 78's? I have several hundred, but have sold most of the good ones I owned. I was big into collecting them back in the 1970's or so, but got so many of them that I was being over run with them and was unable to keep track of what I had. When my dedicated 78 turntable died, I just sold the better ones and stuck the rest of them into boxes. I also have quite a few jazz Edison Diamond Discs (the very thick records) and I do play them some on my Edison phonographs. Mostly as demonstrations, though, to show people what records sounded like in the in the 1910's and '20's.
This background of listening to old 78's, etc. is probably why I can listen to noisy, worn out lp's and not be too bothered by the noise.
Thanks for the great link - fortunately I didn't check it out last night before going to bed, or I would have never gotten any sleep.
Now I need to try and remember what it was I needed to remind you about.
After my coffee, it all comes back to me.Now that does seem like a strange request, though. What do you need your leg raised for?
Dogs do it. Sort of reminds me of a Cole Porter lyric.
I need some more coffee!

I have so much in reference material in books that I tried them first, and when I came up empty, I went directly to the forum to ask the question. It never even occurred to me to Google or any other search. Even though I am deeply entrenched into using the Internet, I still sometimes forget to do a search before asking questions.I suppose it comes with being a "senior" citizen!
Thanks for the links and the help,
Of course it isn't, because the info on the web is, if not daunting, overwhelming!BUT, you led me to an important link that I'd never run into. It's probably available at one, if not many of the other sites I've kept in favorites, yet I've never seen it!
Thank you!
Millions! O.K., maybe just hundreds and hundreds of thousands! It's too much! I wasn't able to breathe for a while, I damn near passed out!
I found that site off of this one. It has a number of good links.
Does it ever end? Everytime I go to a site and it's a bore I say, well they can't all be good references! And then I see sites like these! Unbelievable!Info overload! Reminds me of the National Lampoon record where the one guy keeps saying his brain hurts! When I went back to college in my 40's I had a prof that was absolutely phenomenal! Godfrey Gattiker is perhaps, the best educator I'd ever met; sadly (or happily for him) he's retired now. Getting an A in his courses was like the search for the Holy Grail.
I would walk outside after taking anyone else's tests with the confidence of any adult-ed student...most of the tests I took were a breeze. After taking my first test from Gattiker, I finally understood the true meaning of "My head hurts!"
THAT describes the feelings I had after visiting the site I saw last night. Today's find (and I do thank you, too) was nowhere near as much of a mind blower...I had no mind left to blow!
Sounds like you had a smoke afterwards.
And I thought my recent 75 cent Salvation Army Julie London find was orgasmic! Being here in inland SC "pickens" are slim for vintage equipment and good LP's. When I moved south I guess I traded jazz finds for gospel but the barbecue is good.
Exactly...it's orgasmic!
