I will be mostly in the city of Obama but should be free to travel on the weekends. I hope to have a collegue of mine as a chaperone. He was born and raised in Japan but speaks pretty good English as well.
Follow Ups:
I think it is only an hour and a half or so away. There are quite a few vinyl places in the city center. I have some names at home if you'd like me to post them. One place is jetset records. There is also a jazz-only place just a couple of blocks away. When I was there in July I just wandered around the shopping district and probably found 6 places that sold vinyl.http://www.jetsetrecords.net/
"The main shop was established in 1998.
As the first vinyl megastore in Kyoto, the shop has carried all genre of music including used items. Besides HIP HOP, TECHNO, HOUSE and BREAKBEATS are mainly catered for at present, the selection also covers authentic guitar POPS such as POWER POP, INDIE POP. Especially, the shop proves adept at the underground ELECTRO and BREAKBEATS from the West Japan.

Thanks Replevin,Our sister company in Japan has an R&D facility in Kyoto so I may actually be visiting Kyoto. I am more of a classic rock listener (Led Zeppelin, Who, Floyd, etc.) and will be looking for some Japanese pressings of these types of artists when I'm over there. Do you know if all Japanese pressings are of a higher quality, or are there certain ones that do a consistently good job on their pressings?
There are others in the forum who are more expert than I am on Japanese pressings, but my general experience is very positive. IIRC there is a standard for Japanese vinyl (i.e., the composition - look in the archives).I collect a lot of the same artists and was very pleased with what I found. Interestingly enough, I found a first pressing of LA Woman at Jet Set, so you can find American pressings as well.
Many of the Japanese pressings I bought were for records that I already own and as a general matter, I found them to be excellent. I bought a very cool red or green (can't remember which) reissue of Pet Sounds, and some Queen, Doors, Roxy Music, Linda Ronstadt, Eagles, Doobie Brothers, and a number of other artists I can't remember. Eagles - On the Border, for example, is a superior pressing to my copy (which was not a first pressing).
There is a covered mall/shopping area in central Kyoto and I basically just walked around and looked for record stores. Many are upstairs in buildings and you need to look for signs. If you go to Jet Set, I'm sure that they can tell you where some other stores are located.
The interesting thing is that while I saw vinyl everywhere, I had a very difficult time finding any SACDs!
In general, the Japanese pressings are better. They take more care in manufacturing & pressing. The down side, is they don't always get the first generation tapes to cut the mothers with. I recall copies of Pink Folyd, etc., that were so quiet you could hear the tape hiss on the record! Clearly a second generation tape copy.
