I just found a copy of Getz/Gilberto that appears to be a very early mono pressing. Gatefold jacket in VG condition with a sticker 'Contains the Hit "Girl From Ipanema"'.Anyone know how to tell whether 1st, 2nd or later pressing?
The Vinyl is in VG as well. Quite the nice Goodwill 99¢ find yesterday.

Follow Ups:
This is what the dead wax says:Side A: V-8545 63 VG 160 PR1 Side1
Side B: V-8548 63 VG 161 PR1 Side2All hand written of course.
Does this help? Could VG represent Van Gelder?

My mono copy (deep groove label, no sticker) has this in the deadwax
Side A: V-8545 Side1 63VG160
Side B: V-8548 Side2 63VG161
All of the same information, but different order. So mine is a different master than yours.I have no idea of the significance of that but it is interesting.
I suspect I have a 2nd pressing or thereabouts. Anyway, it is well worth the 99¢ I paid for it.

VG does not represent Van Gelder. The words VAN GELDER would be machine stamped in the dead wax on Verve issues. On earlier records it would appear as a hand etched RVG.
Verve records: look at the info in the dead wax and if it is just the catalog number it is likely a first pressing but if the number is followed by a RE-1, RE-2, etc. then it is a later recut pressing. Some later Verve recuts can sound just like (sometimes better, sometimes worse) than the original. I've heard there is a Van Gelder cut version of this but of the around 15 original pressings I've run across I've yet to see one (maybe it was for the east coast pressings).
i think i have a first pressing but there is no van gelder, i think i was thinking of one of the other getz verve albums i have.
The original release date was 1963, or after the sale of Verve to MGM.Original id # V-8545 for Mono.
If there is a sticker on the cover highlighting a hit song then you can assume that you have a 2nd or later pressing. A first pressing would have been issued BEFORE the song was a hit and thus would not have the identifying sticker.
Overall, an excellent record.
Best,
I too figured the sticker would eliminate 1st pressing.Would a 3rd pressing have been issued while "Girl" was still a hit?
No matter really. I was just happy to come up with a very early pressing in good condition.

does it have the van gelder stamp?
