I have a Rega P25 with an RB300 tonearm and a Denon DL-103R cartridge. I have a chance to buy a Linn Sondek LP12 with a Linn Basik tonearm and no cartridge. I plan on keeping both, but using one as my primary TT.Which turntable is better? Which tonearm is better? Could I get a better sounding TT if I swapped the tonearm on the Linn for the RB300?
Follow Ups:
Is there more than one Linn Sondek LP12 turntable? I am looking at one labeled as a "transcription" turntable. I understood that a transcription TT played 16" records, so is there a plain LP12 that is not a transcription TT?
the arms are probably a toss up, but I might lean to the Rega arm.
The Linn is a much better table, and the good thing about it is that it had been serviceable for the last 20+ years and probably for many more to come. The bad thing (maybe also a good thing if you are the curious type) is that there is a lot to be tweaked and tuned that can easily affect the sound (usually for the better once you get the hange of it).
Having both tables, and neither arm, here is my take. The Linn is a better table, especially when it comes to isolation. Both tables are great in the PRAT area, most likly equal to one another there. Where the Linn wins out is the bass and treble extension extension, resolution of detail, and speed acuracy. My P25 runs fast, as most do. The arms I currently have are a Linn Ittock VII, a Rega RB600, and a Bluenote unipivot. I am planning on reonstalling the the Bluenote onto the Linn soon.
Both are very good decks with thier own strengths and weaknesses. The Rega is so easy to set up and maintain. It also has great PRAT. The Linn has much better bass, and very good PRAT, but is more intensive to set up. I run an RB250 on my Linn and like it quite a bit. I think that stock, the Basik and the RB300 will be in the same league, but a rega with a rewire will give you much more detail and a good clean sound.
