Hi!
Has anyone had the opprtunity to compare the basic Technics 1200 and the same fully modified KAB model? There is a difference in price of about $900 between them.
Do the modifications really improve the table's performance that much? Thanks in advance for all your responses.

That's only $300 total.I'm not convinced that the power supply is worth it as the thing is so damned speed stable out of the box.
I would also dampen the platter and use a better mat.Felt has not worked well for me on my Linn, my Thorens, or my Kenwood tables. I am using a Platter Matter Mat right now and it is very neutral with great overall balance.
Silicone dampening made a huge difference on my SME arms and Kenwood table and I bet it will deepen and better define the bass on the 103R cartridge as well.
Cheers!
Look what we DD afficianados are doing to these bd guys. They never knew they had such PRAT with just a simple switch.
although it would probably benefit from some additional material. The Technics "Super Mat" that KAB provides with their tables also damps it quite a bit more - it's a 1/4" thick rubber material and weighs well over a pound and is essential in order to get VTA correct with non-DJ carts.
Hi has anyone tried damping/wrapping the tone arm with PTFE tape or similar ? Does it work ?
as I just picked up an SL1200 Mk2 this past weekend. I'm quite impressed with it, once I got the arm setup with the Denon DL-103R. Sonically, there's less bass authority with the SL1200 compared to my VPI HW-19 MkIII/Rega RB-900 setup I've been using *but* the midrange is far more articulate by a large margin. I'm still playing around with minor adjustments on the Technics so consider this an initial set of comments. For the price, though, its not a bad LP platform. As for the KAB stuff, I've talked to Kevin about the threaded spindle/clamp upgrade he makes up. Sounds really interesting and I'll most likely go for that first as well as improve the mat - a hard felt thing that came with it. This has been one of the most valuable features of the VPI with warped LPs. Outside of that, I'm not planning to do much with it outside of getting a set of hinges to keep the cat from trying to play DJ when I'm out of the room;-).
Cheers,
Remember that the stock arm is made for DJ's so it is designed to have very sharp and articulate bass at 105 db. It may sound a bit thin at say 75-85 db. Just keep cranking on it and you will see what I mean.I had to reduce the resistance on my preamp to 300 ohms to get the bass nice and deep on my unit.
You may need to play with the loading to get it to sing just right.
Good luck and cheers!
By the way, what do you think of the awesome speed control. Your wow and flutter is now imperceivable.
i have a KAB 1200MK5 that only has the strobe disabler mod. using the $59 shure cartridge from Amazon.com. sounds great as is. beats the pants off my MMF-5 that's sitting right next to it.i have a groovemaster cart on the way.
i plan on getting the arm dampening attachment after the holidays.
so by then i'll be able to make a pretty close comparison between stock and fully modded KAB version.
The Super Mat is $25.00It only come with the MK2 and Japan only MK4
I've compared the bone stock mk2 with and without the KAB arm damper. While the damper is kind of pricey, it does work and it does help clean up the sound. I like it.
The tone arm dampener is well worth the bucks. Turning the super mat upside down is a shock. The strobe killer and outboard power supply are nice but the dampener is the biggest bang for the buck and the new fancy feet are impressive if you need the ultimate isolation. The iso feet would work on other tables to, I think.
