Brought home yesterday my 3rd TD-124,the second one with an SME 3012.This one has an extremely light counterweight that necessitated moving it all the way to the extreme opposite end in order to counterbalance a 10 gr. headshell with a Shure V15MR in it-a far cry from another 3012 that can bear the weight of a 30gr. mono SPU.
And there seems to be a good synergy between the light 3012 and the V15MR.
Were there many different counterweights supplied with the various 3012s?

Then add some weight to the light counterweight to see if moving the counterweight closer to the pivot provides better tracking ability.I think someone changed weights to balance a very light cartridge like the more modern Ortofons that are 4-5.5 grams.
This is neither good nor bad. But in my experience putting the counterweight closer to the pivot improves tracking a great deal.
Cheers!
This arm does have a detachable headshell? Or did the 3012 come with an "improved" version headshell like the Series II Improved 3009 model?
Thanks.Of course-detachable headshell.I will try adding weight(can I use clay?),to enable closer placement to the pivot. Was not aware that tracking could be thus improved, but my experience is that sound is always livelier with the counterweight closer to the pivot.I usually use an electronic stylus weight to balance the stylus for correct pressure, with the couterweight closest to the pivot with the adjusting weight at zero position.

Thanks for the replies.I was under the impression that all 3012s were meant for heavy cartridges.Raanan
The full variety of SME weights can be seen at the analogue-classics site. See link below.I am using a heavy brass counterwight machined for me by HiFi Emporium with my SPU/3012 combo.

Yes, there were at least 2 different size counterweights for the 3012.
They are normally found with the shorter type, and less commonly found with the longer type similar to those found on a series 1.
In the '60's and '70's these weights were often bought seperately to match carts/compliance etc.
There were also different bias weights too. I have even seen a 'hollow' one that must have been the lightest available.
