HiI'm having some frustation problems with the Shelter 501 mk 2. I find it presents the highs as too loud and forward in relation to the rest of the sound and it has a de-emphasis on lower mid range and lower end. A denon DL103 although not as detailed and transperant has an immaculate high to lows balance in comparison.
I'm not sure if its just the way the cart is or the way I've set it up but I'm running out of things to try. I've tried a VTF from 1.7 to 2.2, varying VTA all over the place. I also tried loading the MC stepups down to very low - as low as 1000 ohms through a 1:10 stepup (this would present ~10ohms to the cart).
So I'm concluding this is the way this cart sounds and likely not for me. I'd like to be wrong but ...
Any thoughts?
PS my systems details are up to date if you are interested.

It's very hard to diagnose at a distance, but I had a similar problem. After having a chance to compare mine visually with another, I determined the the stylus assembly was not properly inserted into the body and the cartridge was riding too high. Properly set up, the body should be riding pretty low. Also, when set up properly and at a reasonable tracking weight, the cantilever should be seen coming out from near the middle of a gold circle when the stylus is resting on a mirror, as for HTA adjustment. Mine wasn't. I sent mine back and when it looked right, it sounded right. From time to time the Shelters have had QC issues.
Hope this may help.
This has been a problem with many Shelters, quality control. I've had 2 myself that were faulty and have heard from several other users of quality issues. I've since moved on.
The 501 is not a bright cartridge, and loading around 100 ohms should make it sing sweetly. Something is wrong, I suspect, and if the suspension is OK it might be a damaged stylus.
