I just got a Linn LP 12. It came with a Linn Basic LVV tonearm. Should I replace it with a Rega RB300?
Follow Ups:
The Basik LVV is the S shaped arm.It sounds like everyone is talking about the LVX which is the straight arm and came in a Plus series with a fixed headshell.
The LVX was a low cost arm retailing at about 99 GBP when it came out.
For the LP 12 devotees, the Basik not close to the ITTOK or even RB300. The 300 works well with the Linn, but you will need another armboard. Check the pinkfish forum for more thoughts.
Why don't you live with the Basik for a while and see if it meets your needs.
By the way, Linn used to demonstrate the LP12 Basik, with Basik cartridge (AT) against a Basik turntable with Ittok Asak combination to demonstrate the LP12 made more of a difference than an expensive tonearm cartridge combination.

Thanks for your opinion. I have just set up the LP12 with an RB300. It sounds alright. Later, I'll test the LVV to see if it sound better.
design. I have had numerous of both apart and the similarities are amazing. I think the Rega anti-skate mechanism is better.A Linn dealer friend once sent me a boxfull of defective Basics. all had the same problem. The VTA clamping system (which the Rega does not have) is basically a setscrew jammed against the vertical post. In each case it had been screwed down so hard and so many times that the metal was distorted and depending on the exact position the arm was in put pressuse on one or both vertical shaft bearings. The housing wall seems to be thin and soft. Linn didn't want to know about it. Replacing the bearings fixed the problem until the next time.
I don't know if a RB300 "sounds' better than the Linn (I have never used a Linn arm) but I personally feel it is a better quality product. Considering the price point the Basic was sold at and the fact Linn bought it in from an outside manufacturer (like all their arms and cartridges) it is not a high value product.
I would opt for the RB-300 myself. The LVV was one of the lowest cost Linn arms they produced. I have never owned an LP12 myself, but on other suspended subchassis, belt-driven turntables, (Thorens TD-160S, Ariston 11s, Thorens TD-125mkii)I think the Rega arms can perform extremely well, and have gotten a kind of bum rap in that department.
Agreed. I've owned both arms. The RB300 is superior in virtually every respect.

I've got an Akito Mk2 on my Linn and I think that the RB300 is probably as good as that, I keep swapping them over but..it's close all right..Mind you the RB is fully Origin modded
Agreed. Lotta difference between an Akito and a Basik. Even the Basik Plus is a major step up from the Basik, IMHO.

No. The Basik LVV arm is still better than the Rega. I have a Linn Adikt cart in the arm and it is a very good and musical combination, although no where near as transparent as my primary LP12 that has an EKOS arm and the Arkiv B cartridge.
