Thanks much, Andy. Food for thought. I've been trying not to think about any criteria that would suggest I might be installing and setting up the arm/cart myself (I have a very competent pal), but VTA seems like a very good point.I know the Graham has a reputation as a "reviewer's" arm, being very receptive to cartridge-swapping and subsequent adjustment. I'm the ten thumbs type myself, and whatever arm I get, I'll want to have it set up and leave it alone as long as the music is happy.
Follow Ups:
the Graham 2.2 is a masterpiece of good engineering. It is very easy to change azimuth (not that you do this more than once when you mount a new cartridge) and VTA is simply a matter of turning a knurled wheel."Setting up and leaving it alone" I personally believe is not appropriate for 180gm LPs ... ya pay extra to get these, so ya may as well have the VTA right for the extra thickness. Those poor souls who don't have easy VTA adjustment poo-poo this concept as "obsessive" but, with a Graham, it's a piece o' cake! :-))
And it *sounds* good, too!
Regards,
I believe that on-the-fly VTA should be standard issue. I own several tonearms, but my favorite of the ones I own is the Magnepan Unitrac. I didn't know what a bitch it was to not have a fast VTA adjustment, until I bought an SME. I found out quickly.
Dial-up VTA and interchangeable armwands of differing 'Q' is priceless.
