Just listening to Dire Straits debut LP while breaking in some new AQ Bedrock bi-wire cables on my Mirage OM9s. I've listened to this LP dozens of times. Is there a better "hook" in a rock song than Knopfler's guitar on "Sultans of Swing"? I can't think of one off hand. Other nominations?

Bob's Guitar tone changed my life. Crunchiest guitar ever!
I also love Bob's guitar sound. I would also suggest "Celebrated Summer" from New Day Rising.
China Grove and Mississippi Queen.
Dean.
"…in a Black Dress". The rest of the song is them ripping off Creedence but that first 10 seconds is hard to top.Others:
Beefheart "Moonlight on Vermont"
Volcano Suns "Silvertone"
Prince "When Doves Cry"
Stooges "I wanna be your dog"
Elvis Costello "Watching the Detectives"

I remember when I got my first fuzz pedal, a Proco Rat and that was the first riff I played through that thing. Everytime I hear that riff I have this urge to drop acid...

and one hook each on Sounds of Silence, Serpent of Dreams, and Bare Trees.
In the movie "Blast from the Past", the couple are driving along listening to a Perry Como song on the oldies station and the guy says something like, "Listen to the way this song takes-off!" Of course, by modern standards, it doesn't do much taking off, but a funny line for music lovers.
Every time I hear the song Witchwood it gets stuck on infinite repeat in my head for hours. Hell, just reading the title of your post has kicked on the internal Witchwood loop.“All that I could hear there
Was the sound of my own voice
But the music it was making
Was nothing of my choice”
Have you heard the Cousins and Wakeman cd "Hummingbird" ?Holy Crap, what a recording!
Not everyone's line of country but the guitar hook in this song is impossible to spit out!
I have a "personal" interest in this post:Sunshine of Your Love: Cream
Louie, Louie: The Kingsmen
Smoke on the Water: Deep Purple
Day Tripper: The Beatles
Satisfaction: The Rolling Stones/Devo
God Save the Queen: The Sex Pistols
The Sidewinder: Lee Morgan
1st Movement, 5th Symphony: Beethoven
War Pigs: Black Sabbath
In a Gadda Da Vida: Iron Butterfly
Both instantly recognizable, and there are so many others. One from the past, and one more recent came to mind while reading your post.
By the way Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler are both favorite listens for me. On Ragpicker's Dream there's a song called (I think) You don't know Your'e Born that has a great guitar solo/sound at the end - I always crank it up too loud on that one.
Mike
Agree on the Stones. . . another good one "Straight On" by Heart.

I saw Mark Knopfler live in concert this summer, and the man is just incredible. His sound is something special for sure. I recall Telegraph Road and Speedway at Nazareth being the highlights.
Saw him/Dire Straits in concert in the mid-80s. The man can pick, that's for sure.
