actually the floor does not move. it's fairly solid, but a second floor wood framed house is not like a concrete slab. i'm guessing the walls might carry any vibrations as much as the floor. and for aesthetics, i'm kind of tied to a floor stand of some kind.james
First of all, the outside wall is the steadiest wall for a turntable and is will be far steadier than your wooden floor. Secondly, a corner of a room is the worst place for a turntable. All the frequencies of sound gather in the corner of a room and then ricochet around. This is why the first place you put sound control in a room is in the corners. This is also why you don't want to put the turntable in the corner. Your arm will pick up any vibrations, not just the ones from the vinyl. THE BEST place for a turntable is actually in another room entirely from the sound. If that's not possible, on the outside wall midway between the side walls in the soundroom.
My turntable used to be in the corner of my room, sitting in surpirsingly rugged particle board Wal-Mart audio rack. It had the look of an audiophile rack heh! It worked great too. I dont know the model number but I think it was only 40$ For some reason the corner of my room did not attract vibrations. Now I have it on a more solid computer desk in the center of my room and it shakes like mad.
i used to race club cars (same as SCCA) in new zealand and one thing i learned about racing cars was rigidity. old fashioned race cars achieved high rigidity by using triangulated space frames. tubes of steel are welded into a cage and every point that needs to be rigid (especially near the suspension) is heavily triangulated. these triangulated corner points do not move, but the straight steel tube between them can flex. if the flex is too much, the designer welds another steel tube to the center of the flexing tube, triangulating it.the corners of a house are naturally triangulated in three planes, while the edge of a wall is only stiff in two planes, and the center of your floor is only stiff in one plane. so the corner of your room should be better for turntable placement. i think this makes sense (i am not a structural engineer!)
