I read an old archieved thread on Sansui SP-100 speakers. In this thread one of the posters stated that his SP-100's sounded better with replaced caps. I was wondering what specifically sounded better (top-end, bottom-end)? I ask this because I just came across a set of these speakers and think they sound pretty good except they lack bass. Does replacing the caps have any effect on the bass? Secondly do these speakers contain how you say Alinco magnets and if so is the sound quality produced by these speakers typical of these types of magnets?
Follow Ups:
I had those speakers-still have em somewhere- and the top end is what sounded better. The bass in most of the SP line was not that great. You don't get much bass below 60hz. Not sure if thats the design of the enclosure or the woofer.
I like the base in my SP-2000's. It doesn't go super (40-50) low but is very tight and clean.
so that the speaker works more efficiently, especially running 16ohm`s , so that an 8 watt amp will push a speaker to it`s max, then came the cheap easy watt amp`s that made alnico magnet`s not as usefull., and yes replacing the caps will make a difference in sound ,perhaps not so much on the bottom end ,but it`s well worth the cost.,it`s funny how folks will put so much thought into a system and not think of the last link , the speaker crossover!,it all matters a little , and combined , it matters allot!
weak in the low end - even the ones I had with the 17" woofers (can't remember the model number) - it'd be nice to know if there are any mods that could be made to improve them, cause I seem to run across them all the time
That's a fact. They will play loud, and can sound very good, but nothing below about 60 Hz, man they roll off like an anvil falling off a table. Midbass kicks, though, so lots of rock and roll sounds OK, and they are great party speakers.
....In my humble opinion, best(only) great japanese speaker ever was the late great pioneer HPM 100, what a great system that was!! I may be wrong but I think it was a japanese copy of JBL L100....anyone ever hear of that???
Yes, they were actually designed by the same designer of the L100.
CRS, forget his name, but Pioneer hired him away from JBL. He intended the HPM-100 (in particular) to be a "super L100." In that, he succeeded in spades.
I would say all of the HPM models are stellar performers. The HPM-100 and its successor the HPM-900 (not to mention the 15-inch models!) have superb sound and sound great even today. Yes, I have a pair of HPM-900, and would certainly like to have another pair!
