Hi guys... I recently saw an interesting Pioneer vintage turntable that I thought would go great with my system. I thought it was a PL-560 but in subsequent Ebay searches I think I'm mistaken. The model I'd like to find had a wood (maybe woodgrain vinyl) base, a metal platform insert on top, an s-curved tonearm, but he most interesting feature was a VU meter of some sort that was built into the top and situated underneath the area where the tonearm rests. Any idea which model this was? Was I just wigging out or something? I've tried in vain so far to find a photo or info on this mystery turntable. The one I saw was on Ebay a few weeks ago, not in especially good shape but I was intrigued by the unique instrument feature. Of course I didn't save the info on it at the time since I thought I remembered which model it was....

Be aware that Pioneer *reused* some model numbers from those solid mid- to late-70s/early-80s turntables and some rather schlocky late-80s/90s turntables. PL-560 was one such, IIRC. I have a PL-540 here somewhere (kinda recent move, I'm single, and got 5 stereos set up, I like thought that was enough unpacking, eh?)(Well, hey ...) and it is a solid piece of work.
Thanks for the info. Sooo.....my recollection of the PL-560 model number might not be off at all if, in fact, the model number was re-used. You know, now as I remember some of the ad copy, the guy had stated, "this is the one with the VU meter...". I assumed he was talking about the model in context of the overall line-up but what he must have been doing is clarifying between the duplicate model numbers Pioneer issued. It's all so clear now.....Thanks again, guys.P.S.: Pete, does the 560 you possess have the VU meter? I currently have a PL-55 and the smaller A25 (I really like the older wood bases) on two Pioneer systems and I'm working on completing the third with the 560.
My memory is hazy on this, but I think the "VU" meter was an anti-skate meter. My Pioneer PL-1150 does not have it. I agree that these old Pioneers were built well. Mine looks like the arm was sourced from Luster. You could get a nice sound out of these, for not much money, with the right cartridge.
The meter on those was to show you how fast the platter was spinning in +-% I think. I belive they are quartz locked and variable speed. So if the lock is a little slow or you want to do some fancy DJ stuff like beat match you can speed/slow the platter up a given percentage.
Thanks, Jackson. I knew it was there for a reason but couldn't remember for what. Pete tells me there is a good chance that the model number was re-used later by Pioneer which would explain my confusion (or least partially). I'll continue my search. I've got two systems with a PL-55 and the smaller PL-A25 and identical SX-1050 receivers. I'm working to complete a third "transitional" system with the 560 powered by my hybrid Pioneer SX-D7000 receiver. That's why I liked the transitional blend of direct-drive, wood base but new metal top treatment of the PL-560.
