I missed this system by a couple hours : Marantz 7 preamp, Marantz 8 amp, Bozak B305s, Thorens 124. All in mint condition, For $500. I didn't have the heart to tell the seller he left a little money on the table.

David,You don't happen to be in the Orlando area, do you? :)
ouch...oddly enough, I was on the other end of a similar situation on Friday. I was in an antique/funky junk store and I noticed a Pro-Ject turntable cover in the back of a pile of vintage electronics (mostly battered and worn out Yorx crap). I thought that it probably was just a cover on a low end tt, but to my surprise there was a Pro-Ject 1.2 tt with a Blue Point cartridge (about $700-800Cdn for both) underneath and it looked like it was in excellent shape. The price was $40Cdn, so I asked the owner if he had plegged it in and he said that it started up fine. So I paid for it and while I was at the register he first tried to "upsell" me to a late 80s Fisher tt, he said it did way more than the one I was buying, and then he asked if I was the guy who had called yesterday. I said no, and he told me that somebody called and seemed interested in the Pro-Ject tt, but couldn't make it in til Saturday. I asked if he wanted the owner to hold the tt, and the owner said he did, but wouldn't leave a deposit to hold it. I'm sure he showed up on Saturday and was a wee bit upset at himself for not leaving a deposit. All I can say is that if you find and $800 tt and cart setup for $40 leave the deposit and then make tracks down to the store. At that price it would have been pretty hard to go wrong.
part is that you will never forget it. Best of luck and keep trying!
I tried a last 15 second 'slam dunk' bid on a neat eBay amp. My horrid IP dropped me (again) & I lost the bid. I live in the middle of no-wheres-ville. Not even cable TV for an internet connection. I am studying wireless right now. Although the provider antenna is 20 miles away, I sit on the second highest hill top in lower MI.Being a nut, I will use an oversized dish and tune it myself. I need that 1-meg pipeline real bad!
Say, what is a 'sniping' business?
... a service that allows you place your max bid well prior to auction end (days before) but not to ebay. A few seconds before auction end, the service places the bid for you to ebay and lets ebay's proxy bid system do it's thing. Since the services I'm familiar with have multiple servers with really fast connections, they almost always get in.Two of many advantages are that you don't have to be around your computer at auction end and you don't have to worry about slow connections or being unexpectedly disconnected.
Two disadvantages are that you must give the service your ebay "handle" and PW and they usually charge a small fee when you win. There are others.
Use your favorite search engine and look for esnipe.com as a start. There are other services out there.
