Hello out thereFound a Sony receiver STR-6046 in the garbage. It's a pretty nice vintage receiver but i.m.h.o it doesn't reach my good old handsome Pioneer SX-626. Anyway, I put the Sony up in my office, where it serves me well. Does anyone know some technical specifications of the Sony STR-6046? I wonder, what's the continuous power output per channel, when it was made or what was it's retail-price. Would you agree, that the Pioneer SX-626 has a higher quality than the STR-6046?. Thanks for your information.

I have a 6046A, and think it is a very nice unit. Always liked it, and I think it does look pretty nice.IIRC, it is about 20w/ch RMS.
Cheers,
NO Way! I worked on them all in the day! The Sony's were a step above the Pioneers in build quality and performance. That unit is about 40 WRMS per ch.. That's a keeper! If it's clean and not reworked with poor quality parts, restore it and dump that puny Pioneer!
I just observed, that there's a little problem with my Sony STR-6046: The left speaker-output is louder than the right. This problem does not exist while listening with headphones, so it seems not to be caused by the preamp. While listening with speakers, the symptom can be eliminated by putting the balance-knob at the 2 o'clock position but of course, this is not the definitive solution. So, what could I do? Do I have a severe problem with the amp?
No, doesn't sound like a major problem. These units were as stable as you can get. These and their larger cousins in the same model range had one little problem where a couple of resistors in the power amp would open up - fixed a number of them for this - but the design was bullet proof, IMHO.I'd not worry about it unless there are other things that don't seem right, too.
BTW, Sony's exterior designs were never as flashy as the Pioneer/Marantz/Sansui stuff. That, in no way, is reason to believe they are not good performers.
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
I rescued 1 of these from a thrift store. Also, have a Pioneer SX525. The Pioneer has more punch in the bass but does not have the musical integration of the Sony. The Sony is closer to a Mc and tube sound which is where my preference is. Also, I've its bigger brother for a numbeer of years and is the longest owned receiver in my collection except for a Fisher 500-C. Unlike the Fisher, it has been in continious use. Get a nice set of 8 ohm speakers for it and it will do well. Oh, even if the volume control is not scratchy clean it and the selector and toggle switchs. This helped mine quite a bit.
I agree, the Sony preamp (TA 2000F) was a surprise,I had dismissed it as a Sony (also ran).I bought it for it's adjustable phono stage. It has a very delicate, detailed sound. You couldn't pry it away from me now.
I squirted some Deoxit on top of the scratchy volume pot. It worked....for a while, now it's returned. From looking at the pot, I can't see any opening, so I'll have to remove the faceplate to get a look at the bottom of the pot. Do you know if this is a sealed pot?
No I don't. My units have a space a small space at the connection points so I spray through it. On my big receiver I did it and about 6 months later had to do it again. On the second go around I also used canned air both before and after and have not had a problem again. I now use the canned air on all controls I clean. I also tape the space after to prevent dust from entering.
