ever.....
Follow Ups:
The IC150 and IC150a along with the Dyna PAT-4 and PAT-5 were the worst preamps I ever had the displeasure of trying. The PAT-5 bi-fet was the best of the grouping but Dyna by the time the bi-fet was released was almost off the radar for sales and these are somewhat rare. I think the IC150/150a could be rebuilt with modern ICs and possibly get to the level where it should be an okay to decent preamp. The chassis, transformer, etc. were decent. If nothing else gutting it and building a nice tube preamp in it should be easy.
the 741 type (4558 dual?) op amps were to blame there. The cheap ceramic caps and resistors did not help either.
The APT Holman was op amp based and was also sonically handicapped by its many TL072 op amps, but not quite as badly. I bought one and noticed immediately that my former Yamaha C50 destroyed it. Boo hoo.
I think National LM4562s would make each much more listenable. Both had decent supplies and chassis.
I'm not about to try and find out, that's for sure!
I don't know, Rusty Hoge did okay with his Crown IC-150. He built my aforementioned (see the back to 1972 thread) home-made speakers. He married his IC150 to a Sony power amp driving huge home-made corner horns consisting of JBL drivers, including the sizzling 075 super tweeter. The sound was awesome to my unrefined ear when I first heard it in 1971.
While the Mac was insipid, the ICK was evil. It was the poster child for NFB gone amok. Fingernails-on-a-chalkboard screeching top end. Miniature soundstage. But, it did have the kind of specs Julian Hirsch really liked! Brian Levy has a really funny story about this unit when he was a dealer.
