A nice pair of Dynaco Mark II's and a generic dual mono preamp for $125 at lunch today. No idea if they work but the chassis' are worth what I paid so who cares. Yeah!
Follow Ups:
Pair of AR 2a last week for $25. Already flipped them for $225. Gotta love spring cleaning.
If the Mk II's are working or in restorable condition, I recommend them highly. In my opinion, the very best of the Dyna's. Just use GZ34 rectifiers and replace the selenium rectifier and the caps.
They work perfectly and have what appears to be a pretty fresh set of EIC Mullards in them. I don't think I've ever seen this much Dynaco stuff since the 70's. 2x Pas-3x, 1x FM-3, a ST-70 and now these Mark IIs all in about 2 months. All with original tubes and all working perfectly except for the tape switch on one of the Pas'. I'm not sure why but the II's seem to be worth quite a bit less than the III's so I likely will keep them as my big amps and get rid of the 70's. Curcio here I come! It's cool that I can run 6550's in them too if I need an extra 10 watts or so. It turns out what I thought was the preamp was actually a Calrad SE stereo integrated which appears to have a SS front end. A cute little unit with suprisingly big output trannies for a 4 watt/channel amp. I'm pretty stoked.
No, No, No! Not 6550's. If anything go for KT88's. They won't get you anymore power, but will have a richer sound with a better low end.The main difference between the Mk II and the Mk III is the choke filtered power supply in the Mk III and the GZ34. With EL34's and a GZ34, you can get about 52 watts from the Mk II and better sound IMHO. Ask Airtime. He got the Mk II's and they killed his fully modded Stereo 70.
Before you start "upgrading" the Mk II's just try the GZ34 and replace the selenium rectifier and give them a listen. Hopefully the caps are OK.
My personal opinion is that the Mk II was the original design and it was "hot rodded" to get a few more watts to be competitive (the numbers game). The difference between 52 watts and a marginal 60 is only about 0.4 dB, not enough to worry about. I had a Mk II and a Mk III back in the very early 70's and actually back converted the Mk III to the Mk II, as I preferred the sound.
Do yours have the 4 ohm tap? That was an option on the Mk II.
Hate is too strong a word. Envy and intense dislike will have to suffice. OK, I hate you!
No go on the 4 ohm tap but I don't have any 4 ohm speakers. I have piles of EL34s too but no 6550's so I guess I'll use them. I actually kind of like 5U4's as they have a bit more voltage drop but but don't sag on transiants because they pass plenty of current. Plus I have a bunch of ST ones that look nice and these PT's have plenty of output to run the heaters. And, I've yet to see one fail unlike a lot of 5ar4's over the years.
