Seems somewhere between the good old days and now, headphones or earspeakers (actually there was 1 company that called their unit as such and it was aptly named - anyone know the company besides me?) as they were also called became earphones, buds and cans.

How about the Stax SR-007 Omega II?
the AKG K1000. They were discontinued a few years ago. I never tried them, but heard they had a cult status with some audiophiles.
Was not aware of the K-1000 but from the description they do fit the definition of an earspeaker. The set I was thinking of was the Jecklin Floats. Very similar descrption as to the pros and cons. i loved them but you had to make sure you alwaysused proper English and did not shake your head "yes" or "no". They were the best dynamic system that was designed for using on one's head. Never heard a set of K-1000s and might be interesting, especially in an office where my favorite headphones that is a environment isolation design and hence can not hear the phone ring.
Here are some pics of the discontinued AKG K1000 and the new AKG K701 and comparisons between the two.
