in auditioning your amp/receiver ? Since speaker matching and placement is so subjective, I've been using a pair of Sennheiser HD280s to check out my Marantz 2265B system. The HD280's are very transparent with an extended flat response. Using several familiar classical and jazz recordings, I can compare the sound of the cans with that of various CD/DVD-A players and speakers and make the proper selections.
Follow Ups:
I've had the HD580s for about 10 years and, other than using a small spot of epoxy to firmly seal the leads to the phones, have not had any problems with them. At the present time, I am considering upgrading to the HD650s or the AKG K701s.
I'm really a newbie to running vintage gear. I haven't had a decent audio system for probably 25 years. And then I got an itch after looking at a bunch of unused lps in my basement. Started doing a bit of research. Really lucked out and fell into a pair of Advents at the local Salvation Army and I'm on my way. So I don't really have a bunch of gear. Just like old gear and good music. Not sure what you mean by "cans". But, I put the effort into tweaking and refurbishing the Advents based on the many positive posts about them on this site and others. I am extremely pleased with them. If I chased others speakers probably would be on the look out for a good pair of KLHs or JBL L100s. But, I still need a second pair of Advents to stack or tweak or stack n tweak. (grin)
Garage sale season is open in the midwest so I'm hopeful it will be a good summer.
Seems somewhere between the good old days and now, headphones or earspeakers (actually there was 1 company that called their unit as such and it was aptly named - anyone know the company besides me?) as they were also called became earphones, buds and cans.
How about the Stax SR-007 Omega II?
the AKG K1000. They were discontinued a few years ago. I never tried them, but heard they had a cult status with some audiophiles.
Was not aware of the K-1000 but from the description they do fit the definition of an earspeaker. The set I was thinking of was the Jecklin Floats. Very similar descrption as to the pros and cons. i loved them but you had to make sure you alwaysused proper English and did not shake your head "yes" or "no". They were the best dynamic system that was designed for using on one's head. Never heard a set of K-1000s and might be interesting, especially in an office where my favorite headphones that is a environment isolation design and hence can not hear the phone ring.
Here are some pics of the discontinued AKG K1000 and the new AKG K701 and comparisons between the two.
I use headphones when I do serious critical comparisons as it does away with 1 variable, room interactions with speakers. Also, my headphones come closer to what I have considered the best sounding speakers, the KLH Nines. The phones I use are Koss ESP9b full range electrostatics. Can not easily do blind testing with them.
