I changed all the crtical couplers so far with vitaman Qs and k40s and WOW!!This preamp is running my fully decked citation down and I havent even changed the filter caps yet or the rest of the couplers and decouplers..I just did the input and output couplers and cathode follower and a few innerstages. Its really iry the way it sounds.
If anyone has a noisy control on a preamp that you cant clean to make the noise go away, its coupling caps many times causing this and you can see the speakers oscillate as you turn the volume up and down and you will hear a pop thru speakers when going from aux to tuner to phono when you are switching. Its the easiest way on a citation or a mac or a marantz 7c to see if you have leaky caps if one of those issues rears it head.
Follow Ups:
Have you replaced any of the resistors yet, or just coupling caps? How close are your voltages to stock?I'm impressed. Those things aren't all that easy to work on (altho a lot easier than replacing all the electrolytics on a Tandberg amp... did that once).
Very good work!

Im really in love with carbon comp resistors..Only one was out of tolerance and I mean when my 100k resistors were reading 97K I was happy as can be.The CC seem to have a very wide bandwith and are very open..The voltages are all on the money as well as the resistance checks..I just couldnt bring myself to part with the AB resistors it was born with being they sound OHH soo good..One of my citation ones I built with vishays MF and some WW and the other one I did with carbon film..They both are identical mods other than the resistors and the CF one sounds much more open, real and dynamic.I regret not leaving my other citation 2 with CC or rikens or CF but maybe in the future..I know the MF are supposedly quieter, but I havent found this to be the case at all.I usually just double the wattage when I find a bad cc resistor.
That's really interesting about your experence with carbon resistors. Maybe the metal films being quieter also cuts back on some of the music information that the carbon lets through? Too much of a good thing.
Wow that's awesome. Do you have any pictures of the work you have done so far to the pre?
I will tommorrow
