are intact (all four of them). what do these do, exactly?
Follow Ups:
They are there to prevent diffraction from a wave traveling across the surface and then radiating forward as a delayed signal when it reaches an edge. I've found foam to be more effective than felt for this, and apparently JBL has also. That's a really nice find.
There was a post a few days ago about the 4311B and a lot of good info is posted there. Especially the Dennis Murphy crossover mods, although those would totally change the character of those speakers. My personal inclination would be to use them in restored condition, not modified. They are one of the all time great speakers for rock and popular music. Try some Santana.
What are you going to be using for an amp with those?
Jerry
From what I have gathered from the Lansing site, JBL began placing small bypass caps on their networks at the time of the 43XX's, so you can sometimes comes across these models with and without the bypass caps. Not much of a mod, true, but this is something they were doing, so maybe there is some value to it. I've yet to do mine or even check if they are there or not, they sound great either way, I'm sure.http://audioheritage.csdco.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=3555
Folks here recommend the bypassing for 4311s if it is not there, but they also claim to hear differences between speakers with crushed dust caps and surrounds installed on the front of the cone, rather than behind. Superhuman, they are.
One pair is being driven by a Luxman R-1040 receiver and the other by a NAD 1020 integrated amp. Both were thrift store finds and each under $15.The 4311's will replace a pair of JBL J2060's which are lovely little speakers.
Your thrifts are a heck of a lot better than ours. We mostly get cheap junk.
The good stuff definitely arrives at the thrifts, but it doesn't always leave through the front door. I know Goodwill was fooling around with eBay. And I once saw a local record dealer leave a Habitat manager's office with a pile of records.
Hi Michael,Those JBL speakers you scored are one of the best they ever made. The 4311's are actually a studio control room monitor design. They were sold also as the L-100 Century for home use with a nicer cabinet finish. Enjoy!
I haven't seen the L100's close up in several years, but I have to say the 4311 cabinets are gorgeous - but not as found in the thrift store. Yesterday I bought a can of Watco Rejuvenating Oil and went to work on the walnut cabinets. They now look alot better.
