In Reply to: What are the best of the vintage marantz receivers, and how good are they? posted by bassface on April 21, 2007 at 21:57:04:
In today's market overpriced for their quality except for the 18, 19 and the 2x series. Better off with brands that are very good but not on the vintage collectors and mainstream radar. How much power are you looking for? If in the 50-60 watt range, then look at the Sony STR series such as the 60xx, 70xx, x800 and Vx series. Better quality, better sound and cost less. Also, Philips 797, 787, 7971 and 7871s or even the xx6 and xx61 units are really under the radar and wonderful. Far better than the Philips/Marantz era units.
Follow Ups:
...look into the Yamaha CR-XX00, CR-XX20, and CR-XX40 lines. The CR-820 and CR-1020 are especially nice.

I picked up an STR 6045 a while back, which sounds very good except for somewhat exaggerated bass. The bass control needs to be turned down to about 10:00 or lower to get a proper bass balance. Is that typical of the line?
Don't forget that the Loudness button need to be push-in to be off !Maybe something else wrong...
I have a STR-7045
Thanks for the suggestions. I grew up with a sony STR...

Yeah, Brian named some nice receivers. Read many positive comments.
I would also highly recommend the Concept line of receivers. Onkyo's too.
