any ideas on what amp or receiver will work well with these speakers?
Follow Ups:
I've used mine with a Setton RS-440, an Optonica 5205, and a Realistic RS-2080. The Ar's didn't care much for the Optonica, but the Setton was a really nice, warm, enveloping combination. The Realistic wasn't bad either - I think the AR's like the extra juice.
I'm surprised no one mentioned a good tube amp. Those come from the mid 60's when SS was a rare thing and the few SS amps around had output coupling caps. If you can find one try something like a pair of Dyna MK III's or Mk IV's or a Stereo 70. The Eico ST70 ought to do very well. Failing that try a 1/2 ohm resistor in series with your SS amp and see if you like that. The resistor simulates the source impedance of a 60's tube amp and gives a pretty similar interaction with the speaker. Several owners of AR 3a's tried that with some success and it works with the AR4x and KLH 17.
Jerry, I've been using .5 ohm resistors with just about all my AR's since I first read your posts here.:D

Mine sound great with either my MAC-4100 or my Yamaha CR-1000.

I've tried a lot of amps/receivers with my vintage AR's (3,3a,2, 2a, 2ax, 5, 4, 4x), and to my ears, the most pleasing sound (full, rich, yet detailed) has been found using Sansui amplification. I have a 9090 and a Six.......both sound great with AR's. But my Yamaha CA-2010 also produces great sound with the ARs. Hope this helps. :D
I can also recommend Yamaha gear.
If you ever have the chance to get some Concept (the premium line of Pacific Stereo back when) gear, grab it. I have the biggest Concept receiver, the 16.5, but there are great raves for the baby 2.5. And everything in between.
Anyway, the AR will like some hefty wpc. You will be rewarded with fine sound.
