This e-bay auction for Large Advent speakers just ended at $491.00. Are they really worth that much?
Follow Ups:
I would also say no. I just sold a pair for $200 that were is good condition but whose cabinet's finish were a shade apart. I recapped them with good quality caps, and did a nice re-foam job. They sounded fine to me but not better than my recapped KLH Fives so they had to go. The buyer may not realise how good a deal he got as he to date has left no FB.
and they did look nice. Little light sanding and oiling to even out finish and your done. Not a very nice buyer to skip feedback. I always leave feedback, good feedback. Any chance of a half price deal on the next Advents you put up. ;-)
Mentions stacked Advents positively. Our own Bold Eagle gets a mention as an expert.
Yes, I read the latest TAS issue with a Letter to the Editor re: Praising the sonics/economics of the legendary Large and/or New Advent Loudspeaker. The article simply praised the audio wonder and its enduring Henry Kloss Legacy and cult-like, rabid following of AA Inmates. Plus a rebuttal from the Editors, outlining its history, the inventor and nods to Bald Eagle's technical advice and history. It is a short, good read. Advents Rule.
I bid on that pair also, but I wouldn't go to that high a price. I get a pair eventually, LOL!
$320. These were the ones with psychadelic grills that I posted awhile back wondering if that grill cloth was orginal. The cabinets on that pair appeared in better shape and the compents looked solid.I'm just hoping all the high praise Advents receive on boards like this aren't driving prices up. That would be a shame (for me) as I looked to increase my stash of Advents.
OK, my face is a little red. I still think the drivers are OK but yeah, the grille cloth has been replaced with the badges on the wrong side. The black is OK on the speaker boards though. I have some that are black as well.
These are the ones to buy if you need a great bookshelf speaker. E-bay usually has some selling for waaay better prices. To me they sound almost as good in smaller rooms.
No, and those are not fully original, either. The tweeters look a little different so I'd guess one or both are not original. If they were made too far apart in time, they may sound a bit different. Someone else noted the grill cloth is not original, and he's right; but it also looks like the original black gauze under-fabric is missing. And the grill badges are on the wrong side as someone noted. Further, it looks like the front baffle is too dark and may have been painted black.Getting the transmission of the grill fabric right is really important and I'd worry about that with these.
If they sound good, they are probably worth $150 on ebay, more from a local shop. But $500? Get serious!
I didn't realize thay were far from original, the description indicated that they were just refoamed, which can be expected for their age. I've been watching large Advents on e-bay for a few months and they usually go for around $160-180, this auction astounded me. I'll find a pair in that range for my workout room.
If you get a pair of the original Advents (Masonite ring woofers)plan on new caps for the crossover. It's only a few dollars to do it right and it helps the midrange a lot.The Advent is a deceptively simple looking design, but everything in them was carefully thought out. When I worked it all out, I was really impressed. It's a masterpiece of design. I'm amazed he could sell those for $121 each in walnut.
Thanks for the tip.
Hey Jerry, a $350 pair of Utility Advents will soon be joining da audio arsenal. Found a curbed pair of oak-cabbed Advents several years back. Fairly well trashed, except for those Masonite surrounds. Finally got around to takin' 'em to Brown Soun for re-coning, along with a pair of blown tweets. Charlie said they couldn't recone the tweets, but had a similar second generation pair for $110 each(an updated Advent replacement was $65 each). Makes one wonder what that original tweet duo could be worth? Got those Utility Advents from a co-worker a decade or so ago. Chucked da original woofs, like a fool, in favour of Technics woofs(now utilized for rear channel duty). Blew da tweets over-pre-amping da Sansui when it first arrived. Am now paying dearly for that double dip into auditory malfeasance. But $350 for up-to-date retro classique seems a decent refund investment! Those trashed oak cabs face a future hosting hemp-coned V30s, powered by Altec/Lansing 1569A amplification! P.S.: Heartfelt sympathies to eastern-n-midwestern-n-southern storm victims, as well as to Virginia Tech victims' families-n-friends(just announced over KVMR)!
Grills have been recovered. Not orginal material, badges on wrong side and no way of knowing if the black backing material is there.Advents were very afordable in the 70s. A working mans audiophile speaker. That's why there are so many around these days. Thrifts, internet, garage sales, estate sales, etc....
Me, I would save my money and buy a truly nice intact pair.
A couple of years back, Stereophile did a thing on 100 products that rocked the hi-fi world. The Advent made the list as the first affordable audiophile speaker. I wouldn't have put it on my list for that reason, but it would certainly be on my list as it was a very influential product.Today, some 37 years later, we look at it as a lower cost alternative to the AR3a and KLH 5 in the new England Sound school of design; but at the time it was much more. In 1970-71, a pair were $228 in walnut and $202 in vinyl; at a time when a pair of AR3a's or KLH 5's cost $450. As you said "a working man's audiophile speaker". I can remember the stir when they came out, and I quickly went and found a shop that stocked them for an audition. They were set up with the usual speaker wall and switching console and in this shop the house amp was McIntosh. I went through AR-3a, AR-5, AR-2ax, KLH 5, KLH 6, KLH 17, and the Advent. The Advents bettered them all, overall; except the little KLH 17 was better on vocals. The KLH 5 was very close, maybe better, but at twice the price, it was no contest.
I don't know if it's still true, but at one time the Advent was the highest volume speaker of all time. It might still be, I'm hard pressed to think of any other single model that could replace it. The JBL L-100 had the title for highest dollar volume of any model. That too, might still be a record.
I have a set in close to original condition that I was trying to sell locally for $150 Cdn. No takers. I think I will hang on to them for a while now as an investment, now that they are worth over $500 Cdn. Just kidding. I think we would all agree that this is a ridiculous price. I checked the purchases of the purchaser on ebay and he or she is paying a lot of money for a lot of equipment. In many cases way over market. Go figure.
Last September, I picked-up locally a pair of New Advents (1978 stamp) for $160.00 CDN less $15.00 trade-in for Phillips 212. According to flea market seller, single owner who listened to classical music only. I found another pair (did not buy) for sale on the net locally for $75.00. I am now in the midst of upgrading the Advents, new surrounds, GP quick disconnects, Monster Cable XPCIS50, Eichmann CablePods plus new caps and later a new furniture-grade veneer make-over. I am procrastinating on upgrading the caps, but I will take Bold Eagles recommendation that the caps will improve the mid-range. Nuff said.
I had noticed the purchaser's prvious buys and thought them extravagant as well. I guess he has money to burn, LOL!
The high bidder is definately dropping some coin on vintage audio gear. It appears to be quite a hodge podge of stuff.
those went for that much money is that they are in real nice original condition (woofers with the original dust caps, no changes, nice grilles, etc.) and the bidders evidently got cought up in a war. That price is an exception, however, because the highest I've seen a near mint pair go for before this is around $300.00.
The nicer pairs are becoming more scarce though.
and the guy was selling it for $120.00. The sound was ok. if anything, it was little veiled for my taste. Would I buy them for collecting purposes probably not.
When they were new in the '70's I really wanted them, but they were out of my price range. Now I'm puting together a second system for my workout room, and I wanted to pair them with a '70's era reciever I have. But not for that kind of money, LOL!
