Before you get rid of the tuner & preamp, follow power wiring to On-Off switch; it may be that the power amp section cannot be powered on without connections to the preamp. Of course you can wire around that, but the original set-up is useful for *instructions* as to how. I like & use tone controls for room adjustment today just as yesterday & am listening to Jazz at Lincoln Center on PBS, preceeded by Jazz on the River Walk, so I cannot fathom why you would get rid of them. Oh, well.

Thanks Ron.I have way too much gear that I might never get to. I discounted this one pretty quickly due to small oputput iron. I may be wrong here but I had an amp as a kid that had small output tranies and no bass. I guess the disapointment of that after my hard work cutting lawns and shoveling snow to buy it sticks with me.
For a 6BQ5 type power amp I like the Dyns Stereo 35's and I have a few Eico HF-81's, Scotts,Fishers,SE 6BQ5 amps, etc.
Small outputs have the benefit of having smaller coil windings, thus less interwinding capacitances and inductive reactances. Sometimes, they have plenty of bass and great highs. Sometimes, not so great bass. The units in that 440 are good ones. The limitation in that amp is the voltage doubler power supply.
As their bay price keeps climbing, they must be worth a listen.
Speaking of small outputs, have you seen the Ampex speaker amps' output ? How about the ST35 and the HF81 ? They are not large, but compared to these little Fishers they are...
It's a crapshoot, really. They might surprise you, just like your hot rodded HF81 surprised you, pal...
