You need to restring the dial cord with new string and then you can take a couple loop links out of the spring if you want..Also make sure the mechanical string loop isn't binding anywhere because will It will cause slippage like your having.

Restringing it I'm trying to avoid in case I have troubles puting it all back together.
I have or had a tube caddy with a stick of it inside. But when that doesnt work restringing is the only alternative.
Try antique audio supply. they would be likely to have it.
Tuning string wax is what its called i think.
Bees wax which is sold at Ace hardware. Just rub it on the string and no slip.
