You are correct about the problem and the soulution sounds doable. Thanks! I knew I wasn't the only Yamaha fan out there! I did a search and most inmates who posted think that the C-85 is a very nice sounding preamp. I like my C-60 a lot, so I'm sure I will like the C-85.

Count me in as another huge fan of Yamaha gear.
C-80 and CX-2, M-70, M-80, two T-80, & the R-2000.
I like it a lot. Very clean and neutral sound and a good phono section. I hear those are common traits among all Yamaha models. Pretty good build quality, too.
Records are my main source so the phono section is very important to me. Yamaha will not let you down in this regard. The Yamaha separates that I have tried have the charateristic smooth sound comon to Yamahas, while still being very transparant. I love the sound of my M60 in Auto Class A. I suspect that the C-85 will sound very similar to my C-60. It does have a few nice extra features on it. I like the inverted pre outs!Best wishes,
