I just picked up a Yamaha C-85 pream for $20. It seems to be working fine but the RCA pre-output jacks are the metal for ground. It looks like they were pulled out when a pair of cables were removed. I was able to test it through the phase inverted pre outs but I would like to be able to use both normal and inverted. I suspect this happens often with Yamaha preamps due to the design of the RCA cable. Is there an easy fix for this? It looks like it would be difficult to put in a new set of standard jacks.I am currently using a C-60 but the extra features on the C-85 look good to me. I like the C-60. I also have a C-40 and a C-4! I guess I'm collecting Yamaha preams.
Thanks!
Follow Ups:
I have a cx-830 with a pre output ground that is lose and needs to be soldered back in. Works fine, never had a problem with it.I also have a Sansui C-2102 preamp missing one of the pre out grounds and it works fine without it.
I would have never thought of this myself! I might try it with an amp and speakers that I don't care about.
the metal ground of the RCA is gone. presumably with the cable.
I have harvested that part from parts units i have around. It has two or three tabs(look at the area where they are missing and count the tint slots)
There may be variances (two tab, three tab) but the idea is the same. You will have to open it up and solder the tabs to ground.
Just be gentle prying the tabs from the doner unit. They can break.
You are correct about the problem and the soulution sounds doable. Thanks! I knew I wasn't the only Yamaha fan out there! I did a search and most inmates who posted think that the C-85 is a very nice sounding preamp. I like my C-60 a lot, so I'm sure I will like the C-85.
Count me in as another huge fan of Yamaha gear.
C-80 and CX-2, M-70, M-80, two T-80, & the R-2000.
I like it a lot. Very clean and neutral sound and a good phono section. I hear those are common traits among all Yamaha models. Pretty good build quality, too.
Records are my main source so the phono section is very important to me. Yamaha will not let you down in this regard. The Yamaha separates that I have tried have the charateristic smooth sound comon to Yamahas, while still being very transparant. I love the sound of my M60 in Auto Class A. I suspect that the C-85 will sound very similar to my C-60. It does have a few nice extra features on it. I like the inverted pre outs!Best wishes,
