I have played with some cap coupled amps and they do seem to have a more tubey sound. I assume high source impedance is a big factor but I have also wondered if the lack of DC has a positive effect on the sound. A lot of people still think John Linsley-Hood class A amplifier is great sounding and it is cap coupled.
Follow Ups:
I have an article by Linsley-Hood and in it he talks about his preference for the sound of capacitively coupled amps in the highs, where source impedance should not be an issue. unless it's related to the overall balance, which is warmer with most speakers.
I thought of building his class A amp. It is a very simple design and boards are available. I think it is only 10 watts so I would have to use it with high efficency speakers.
He also did a nice class AB, 30 watt amp.
Right now I'm partial to Class A. My Yamaha M-60 Amp sounds better with the Auto Class A button pushed in, although it still sounds very nice in Class AB. It seems smoother and more relaxed as long as I don't push it too hard. That smoothness doesn't seem to sacrifice any detail. It does run hot when the switch is in.
