it is an ah tjoeb 98. an inexpensive upgrade to that would be?

Th Tjoeb has a tube output stage so, it should not be the souce of sibilance unless something is wrong. I would fist try cleaning the contacts. I would also check the outout of the Tjoeb and see if it is not overloading your input. Tube sections can have a lot of gain. If there is no problem with gain, you might wan't try different tubes. There a a few users of the Tjoeb that can make recommendations on the Digital Asylum.
This is turning into a very enlightening thread. New tubes can certainly be the source of your harsh ssssssses. Newer Eastern Euro 6DJ8s and 12AX7s and 12AU7s can sound very harsh, compared to older, vintage UK, Western Europe, or even USA made tubes.
Did you notice the harshness when you added the new CD player or new cables ? Let us not forget, that every electronic part requires "break-in time, including cables and tubes and caps, etc.
Keep us posted of your findings. It will interest all of us, what caused the distress...
i will change tubes wednesday and report back. i have brand new stock tubes the type that came with the original unit and the new tubes i mentioned earlier - will try the 6922 first - since they are brand new i will let them play a while before judging.
Try vintage NOS tubes if the new ones don't work. A tube output stage gives a lot of opportunity to voice.
Probably.I wanted to make sure that others with an old BOTL Sony or something could progress far for cheap.
I have a hard time with a lot of CD's and players. Nasty highs, massed instrument screech, etc.
Bring it over someday, I never heard one.
